T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN Pn'r'riensnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ortonville, in the county of Bigstone and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Dial-Mounting, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invent-ion relates to dial mountings for use on watches, and for other like purposes, and has reference more particularly to the combination of a frame adapted to receive a dial, a dial associated therewith, and means for gripping the dial at the edge, to hold the same relative to the frame, a dial received within the rim and formed at one side to engage at the undercut part of the rim, and a releasable lock for holding the dial fixed relatively to the frame at a part thereof remote from the undercutside of the rim.
The object of the invention' is to provide a simple, strong and durable dial mounting which can be employed for securing the watch dial in position with respect to the watch frame, and for other like purposes, by means of which the dial can be securely held in position, notwithstanding that it can be readily released and removed when desired, which adds little to the weight and size of the st-ructure with which it is employed, which does not detract from the appearance of the dial or watch, and which can be manipulated with ease and rapidity.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of `a dial and dial mounting embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the frame showing the dial removed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged, transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary, edge elevation of the frame showing certain of the details of construction.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that notwithstanding that the dial mounting is designed particularly for use with watches, it can also be advantageously employed in connection with other structures which include dials of similar or different kinds.
Certain of the details of construction, shown for example herewith, form no part of the invention and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions, without deviating from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I employ a frame consisting of the plate which carries the dial, the plate being secured in a watch case or the like, in the usual manner. The plate 10 has a laterally disposed annular rim 11, and within the rim has an offset shoulder 12. The dial 13, which is of the customary construction, and comprises a metal or other back 14 and a porcelain or similar' face 15, is received within the rim 11 and fits snugly therein. At one side, the dial, for approximately a third of its periphery has a beveled edge 16 which'is received under the rim 11, the latter being correspondingly undercut for the purpose. Centrally disposed with respect to the beveled portion of the dial and the undercut part of the rim, is a dial keeper 17 which is in the form of a preferably cylindrical peg secured to the frame, and received in registering, semi-circular recesses 18 and 19 of the rim and the dial. The keeper serves to hold the dial in a predetermined position relative to the frame, and insures the proper placing of the dial within the rim. At the side of the frame opposite the keeper, the shoulder 12 has a recess 20 in which is securely mounted by means of a pivot screw 21, a locking member 22, consisting of an elongated, curved element having a laterally extended head 23 received in an edge opening 24 of the rim, and having a limited movement through the same. The head has an upwardly disposed, undercut shoulder 25 adapted to engage at the corresponding edge of the dial 13, which has a suitably beveled part 26 for the purpose; A spring 27 is iXed within the recess 20, and engages t-he locking member, tending to hold the same in a normally operative position.
The edge opening 24 has a rounded extension 28 for the insertion of a suitable implement when it is desired to remove the dial from the frame. This implement may consist of a needle or the like. By means of the implement the locking member can be forced outwardly against the tension of the spring 27, to release the shoulder 25 from engagement with the edge of the dial. At the same time a downward movement of the outer end of the implement, which is thus used as a lever, will force the correspending edge of the dial out of the :trame so that the dial can subsequently be removed without further difficulty.
It will be understood that at one side, the dial is held in position by the engagement of the beveled edge 16 with the undercut rim l1. At the other side t-he dial is held in place by the locking member.
It will be understood that when the frame and dial are in place in a watch case the frame ts snugly so that the locking mem ber is held in a closed position not only by the spring but as well by the engagement therewith of the case. The spring 27 is an auxiliary, and if so desired it may be eliminated. As the locking member is rigidly secured at one end, its natural spring will v answer the purpose and tend to hold it in a locking position.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In combination, a frame having a ring undercut at o-ne side, said ring having an opening at the other side, a lock having a head movably arranged in said opening, a dial received within said ring and having separated edge portions beveled at the opposite sides whereby it can engage under said rim and be engaged by said head of said lock.
