Specification Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.15, 1913.
Application flledJuly 5, 1912. Serial No. 707,849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, 'JAMEs C. RADER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety envelops, the object in view being to provide an envelop which is both safe and secure against fraudulent opening, and also sanitary, in that the closing or sealing fla is adapted to be connected and held to the ody of the envelop, without the aid of any adhesive material, the fastening device for securing the closin flap being economical in construction and e .ective.
it further object of the invention is to provide a particular form of locking device which has a spring action, permitting the locking tongue to be inserted through a slit in the envelop, and automatically caught and held by means of yielding stop fingers or wings.
' With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as
wild be hereinaftermore fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto ap' pended.
lln the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view body portion 1., a bottom flap 2, end flaps 3,
and a sealing or closing flap 4, the flaps 2 and 3 being pasted together in the usual manner, while the closing or sealing flap 4 is left devoid of any paste or um.
In carrying out the present invention, the sealing or closing flap 4 is provided with a central outwardly projecting tongue 5 of c any suitable width, while the back of the envelop is provided with a slit 6 of a length equal to or slightly greater than the width of the tongue 5, for the purpose of receiving the tongue, the latter being adapted to be inserted through the slit 6 from the outside to the inside of the envelop. The tongue 5 is provided at opposite sides with the oppositely extending wings or fingers 7, the length of each of which is greater than the width of the tongue 5. These wings 7 are folded back upon and across the tongue 5 in a manner illustrated in the drawings, and on account of the length of the said wings, the opposite extremities thereof project beyond the lateral side edges of the tongue 5, as clearly shown, and said wings also slant backward to facilitate inserting the tongue and wings through the slit 6 in the envelop. In order to further facilitate such insertion of the tongue through the slit 6, the tongue may be pointed to any desired extent, as shown at 8.
It will nowbe seen that after the contents have been placed in the envelop, the sealing or closing flap 4 is folded to its closed position, and simultaneously therewith the tongue 5 carrying the spring fingers 7 is inserted through theslit 6. By reason of the manner in which the wings are combined with the tongue, it will be observed that the extremitiesof the wings will yield backward to allow them to move within-the marginal edges of the tongue 5, and consequently they pass easily through the slit 6, but as soon as they move out of engagement with the slit 6, they spring back to their projecting position, so that a double shoulder is formed at opposite ends of the slit 6, and the wings serve as stops to prevent extraction of the tongue from the slit, without so mutilating the parts as to render it clearly apparent that the envelop has been tampered with.
What is claimed is:
An envelop having a slit through one side thereof, and a closing flap having a projecting tongue with laterally projecting relatively narrow wings, the length of each of which is greater than the width of the tongue, said wings bein folded across the tongue and each other 0 liquely so that the extremity of each wing projects at its free In testimon whereof I aflix my signature end beyonili tha lateralhedge lot the tongue in presence 0 two witnesses.
oppositetee etowichtewin isattached, whereby the projecting ext mities JAMES RADER' of the wings are adapted to spring back as Witnesses:
the tongue with its wmgs is inserted through JOHN F. KIM,
the fia I A. P. WHITNEY.
