COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND BIlRNT-MATCH RECEPTACLE. 1
' ToaZZ whom it mag/ concern: I j
. Be it known that I, ALoNzo C. HALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented an Improvement in Combined Match-Boxes and Burnt-Match Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
'I have devised a pocket receptacle for burnt matches which forms an attachment of a match-box proper, the latter being of a well known type. The said receptacle is ar ranged directly under the match-box and provided with a metal fastening which engages the hollow body of the IIXtLtCl'I'bOX and is fastened det-achably at its free end by means of a spring catch. In other words, the latch fastening or latch detachably connects the match-box and the burnt-match receptacle and allows easy application and detachment of the former and at the same time serves as a part of the fastening for the lid or cover. I
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the combined match-box and burnt-match receptacle sccured together in the manner required for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bur it-match receptacle with the lid or cover partly open. I
In Fig. l, A indicates a common form of paste-board match-box consisting of a hollow body open ateach end and a match tray adapted to slide therein. The burnt-1natch receptacle B is a rectangular sheet metal box having a lid or cover 6 hinged. at one end thereof. The means for detachably'connecting the boxes A and B consists of a. wire loop Z) which extends longitudinally of the cover 6 and is secured to the end thereof adjacent to the hinge 5 The latch I) is made of sufficient length to project slightly beyond the adjacent end of the cover 1), whereby it is adapted to engage a spring catchb the same being preferably formed of springwire whose looped end projects upward and curves outward from the end of the box B. In order to secure the matchbox A to the burnt-match receptacle B, the

latch or Wire fastening b is passed through the hollow body of the box. A and then pressed down over the projecting end of the spring latch 5 until the parts are engaged as shown in Fig. 1. Thus the latch 1) extends across and presses down upon the lower portion or bottom of the match-box A, so that thelatter is secured etl'ectively but detachably to the box B. The latch does not interfere with the sliding movement of the tray a of the match-box When'it, is required to obtain access to the latter. In order to open the burnt-match receptacleB his only 7 necessary to press lightly against the free end of the latch (2 which allows the free end of the cover I) to be raised, together with the matchbox lying thereon. I desire it understood that While I prefer to construct the part b as a sprin catch, it is practicable to make it entirely rigid and secure the same result by reason of the spring or resiliency of the looped end of the p latch I). x
What I claim is I Y 1. The double receptacle herein described, consisting ofa match box proper, asburnt 7!} match receptacle having a hinged cover, a latch extending along the top of the cover and through the hollow body of the matchbox, and a fastening applied at the end of the burnt-match receptacle for engaging the latch, as described. 7 2. A receptacle consisting of a box having a cover hinged at one end and a fastening device secured at"one of itsends to such hinged end of the cover and extending over the latter lengthwise and parallel thereto, it being thus free or unattached to the cover save at the hinged end of the latter, whereby it is adapted for engagement With another receptacle for holding the latter in place on the box, and a catch applied-to the end of the said box for engaging the free end of the fastening device, as described ALONZO CHRISTQPHER HALL.
