LEWIS A. CARPENTER AND RICHARD MIDDLETON, 0F REVERE, IMASSACHUSETTS',
BLADE-HtlLDING nnvron.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed May 16, 1912. Serial No. 697,668.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEWIS A. CARPEN- 'IER and RICHARD MIDDLETON, citizens of the United States, residing in Revere, county of Suffolk, and State of -Massachnsetts, have invented an Improvement in Blade-Holding character described, which is inexpensive and eflicient in operation and to which theblade can be applied and removed therefrom with little effort on the part of the operator and without danger of being cut. inhandling the blade.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blade holding device embodying this invention. Fig. 2, a side elevation of ,the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, .a section on the line'3'3,-Fi'g.' 2.. Fig. 4, a side elevationshowing the blade holder in its open condition ready to receive a blade. Fig. 5, a detail to be re.- ferred to, and Fig. 6, a section on the line 6- '6, Fig. 1.
Referri to thedrawin a, 5', represent two clamping members orthe blade 0,
which latter may be of any suitable;con-- struction such as now used .with any of .the well-known types of safetymazors.
The clamping members a, b are made of sheet metahpreferably steel and are made of sutficient width to firmly su port the blade 0, and have extended from Ehem materially narrower arms 10', which are made substantially long and may be secured together at their rear ends as herein shown by a sleeve 12, which is retained in position on the arms by a shoulder 13 on the arms and by the outwardly bent ends 14 of the same.
The sleeve 12 ties the arms 10 together at the end opposite to the clamping members andsaid arms are bent away from each other from the end inserted into the sleeve to impart to said arms a springaction by which the clamping members are moved away from each other bodily andare se arated at their opposite sides and outer on s for a purpose as will be described.
The olampingmembers a, b are provided with means for engaging the blade so as to secure it in fixed relation to the said members, and in the present instance, one clamping .member as a is provided with projections or. lugs 15, which may be integral with the memberas herein shown, and which are made of suflicient length to extend through one or more openings in the blade and into openings 18 in the member 5.
In the present instance, the blade 0 is shown as provided with a single opening or slot 17 and the member a,with two lugs 15, which are designed to pass through the slot 17 and enter two openin s,18 1n the member Z), but it is not desire I to limit the invention to the particular number of lugs or openings herein shown.
Provision is made for securing thee-lampin members intheir closed or operative 0- sit-ion, and for this purpose is employs a tube 20 having a slot 21 extended longitudinally for-a portion-of its length and of sufficient length to enable the clamping members a, b. to be passed into thesame.
The slot 21 is made of a width substantially equal to the't-hic'k'ness of the clamping members a, 7) and the interposed blade 0, so that when the clamping members with the blade between them is slipped into the slotted tube,
the walls of the slot will exert a pressure on the clamping members'and cause the latter to ho-ld the blade firmly against movement, as represented in Figs. 2 and 6.
The walls of the slot 21 may and preferably will be rovided with inclined portions-Q-Q at their outer end, so as to form a V-shaped entrance to said slot, which assists in guiding the clamping members into the slot, and. also allows the clamping members to spread suflioient-ly to enable the blade tobe readily removed and placed in position as represented in Fig. 4.
It will be not-iced that the clamping memturn the blade or edge of the blade by contact with metal.
Provision is also made for limiting the movement of the clamping members and their arms 10 out of the slotted tube, which a is effected as herein shown by providing the tube 20 on its inner surface with a projection 24, which is designed to be engaged by the front end. of the sleeve 12, and said sto is preferably located so as to be engaged by thesleeve when the clamping members are beyond the front end of the tube 20 and the portions 25 of the arms 10 immediately behind the clamping members are engaged with the sides of the V-shaped end of the slot, which serve to prevent the clamping members from rotating or turning out of alinement with the slot, whereby said members are maintained in position to be quickly pushed into the tube. A
The clamping members a, b, may be provided at their rear ends with a curved portion 26, which is shaped to receive the thumb of the hand which graspsthetube, so as to enable the clampingmembers to be ushed forward out of the tube, when it is desired to place a new one between said members. A I
The tube 20 constitutes a hollow holder for the clamping members, and its unslotted portion maybe milled or'knurled to afford a firm grip for the hand. The tube may be closed at its rear end by a suitable cap 27.
In operation the blade 0 is placed upon the clamping member a after the manner represented in Fig. 4, with the lugs 15 extended through the slot or opening 17. The members a, b, are then grasped between the fingers and. brought together with the lugs extended into the openings 18 in the member 1). Both members are then pushed into the hollowholder until the clampingmembers are stopped by the end wall of the slot 21, as represented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. VVhen-in this posit-ion, the holder can be manipulated like an ordinar or old-fashioned razor for stropping the bi ade, and when stropped, the razor can be used for shaving in the same manner as the ordinary razor or as is preferred, the blade can be removed and used with the holder of the safety razors, such as now found on the market.
