POCKET SAFETY RAZOR.

To all whom t may concerny Be it known that I, NOEL STATHAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Irvington, county of Westchester,
State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Pocket Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates especially to razors which may be of the safety razor type and comprise a sheet metal handle preferably formed with a dished up or concave resilient pivotal portion. A hinge support of sheet metal or other material may be pivotally connected with the handle as by a fixed or adjustable pivot allowing the desired amount of swinging movement between these parts which may be limited as by stopsor projections. The hinge support preferably carries a hinge pin or device at some distance from the pivot about which the hinge support swings, and a resilient sheet metal blade holder may advantageously be pivoted about the hinge pin as by an integral hinge tongue on the blade support which may have cooperating gripping lips to engage and hold a safety razor blade of practically any of the usual replaceable types. The guard of sheet metal etc. may be detachably secured to the blade holder by any suitable resilient gripping members, and bifurcated tongues or portions on either of the-se parts may enclose and grip Suitable edges on the other holder which preferably is the blade holder having a slot on its under surface; and by forming an enlarged end in this slot, a central guard retainer tongue formed on the guard may be inserted in this slot and forced along the same so as to engage and grip the adjacent edges or portions of the blade holder, the parts preferably having cooperating detents or aligning members so as to definitely and releasably hold them in operative position.

be swung together with the hinge support about the handle pivot so as to give ya draw cut, if desired, while when not in use the blade holder is preferably folded down adjacent the handle and swune about its pivot so as to bring the edge o? the blade substantially parallel to the center line of the handle so that when the guard has been removed the blade holder may be unfolded to extend out in the plane of the handle so that theblade may be stropped in this position by hand or otherwise. lVhen the guard is in place and the blade holder folded down against the handle in this longitudinal parallel position an extremely compact article is thus formed for traveling, for instance.

In the illustrative embodiment of the invention the razor handle 21 may in many cases be formed of resilient sheet metal such as brass, German silver, etc., which may be plated, if desired, with nic-kel, silver, or other suitable material. This handle is preferably7 formed with a dished up or concave resilient pivotal portion 25, as shown in Fig. 2, in which the pivot 22 may be arranged so as to secure thereto the cooperating sheet metal hinge support 18. This hinge support may have integral tongues or hinge portions 47 in which the hinge pin 17 is mounted so as to hinge to this support the blade holderl 2 which may be similarly formed of resilient sheet metal having the bent or folded lower portion l so that the cooperating gripping lips Llbeyond the bent portions 3 are adapted to securely but disengagably hold between them a razor blade such as 5. As shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the blade holder may be Ytermed with a slotted out portion so as to form. the hinge tongue 37 bent around the hinge pin to form a hinge connecting portion on the blade holder and the tightness of this hinge joint between these parts may be readily adjusted as by screwing up the adjusting head 26 or the projecting aligning nut or member 27 on the other 'threaded end 2S ot this hinge pin. rlhis projecting nut or a similarly projecting head on the other end et the hinge pin may, il? desired, serve as stops to limit the angularly swinging movement oit' the blade holder and connected hinge support 18 with respect to the handle since these portions may engage the handle as shown in Fig. 7 where the part 27 engages the recessed portion oli the handle so that 'further swinging movement in this direction is thus prevented after the blade holder has been swung around into the desired closely folded or shipping position. lt desired, however, the hinge support 18 may be formed with a rearwardly projecting aligning lug or member 2li passing over the edge ot the adjacent handle portion, if desired, so as to cooperate with the stops Q() therein and thus form delinite aligning stops to siniilarly limit the movement ot these parts.
As shown in Fig. l, the blade holder is preferably formed with blade adjusting recesses such 32 giving access to the rear portion ot the blade so that the user can disengage or adjust the same conveniently and as shown in Fig. 5, one or botl ends otl the blade gripping lips et may be beveled at their ends so as to Atacilitate the lateral insertion ot the blade into the holder. By 'Forming the blade holder with a guard inserting slot 35 on its under suriace, as shown in Figs. 3 and v57 the guard ineopai may be very readily attached to the holder when provided with a central guard retainer tongue such as 1l,` preferably extending somewhat out beyond the edges of this slot so that after its insertion in the enlarged slot end 36 this tongue may be pushed down inside this blade holder while the resilient lateral portions l0 ot the guard engage the outside of this sheet metal member to resiliently grip the same. lt is usually desirable in order to Yfacilitate the insertion ot this retainer tongue to form the lateral edges thereof with the projecting guiding ends l/l shown in Figs. Q and 3 so that these ends can enter the slot 36 and guide the tongue in its further movement. Cooperating detente such as l5, 23 may be iormed on these cooperating parts as shown in Figs. 2, il and 5. so that when the guard tongue is pushed into the blade holder to the desired extent these detents engage and position the parts while allowing their ready disengagement when desired; In applying this guard it is advantageous to form a projecting grip such as l2 on the retainer tongue so that the user may engage it with his thumb or finger in pushing the guard into place and, as shown in Fig. 5, this grip is slightly narrower than the inserting slot 35, thus positioning the guard laterally with respect to the bla-de holder so that the assembly oli these parts is practically automatic and oli course as the `guard is forced home the blade aligning` members thereon .insure the proper positioning o'l the razor blade by engagement therewith as the cooperating detents enga-ge preferably when the corners 34 ot the guard inser g slot are engaged between the retainer tongue and lateral portions oi the guard adjacent the bends Q2 ol these lateral portions,`see Fig. ln disengagingthe guard the user may readily remove it from the lilade holder by pushing` on the grip lf2 or on the projecting portion 7 ol the guard it desired. so `that where the guard is removed 'lor cleaning or replacingl the razor blade this may be done instantly and then the parts replaced and repositioned in a definite and reliable way without substantial loss ol time. ln stropping the razor blade with this device the guard may be removed and the blade holder and blade swung out into the lateral stropping position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7 so that the blade 5 may then be stropped by hand on a razor strop or otherwise sharpened in any desired way.

In safety razors, a resilient sheet metal blade holder formed with a guard inserting slot having laterally enlarged slot ends, and a resilient sheet metal guard having blade aligning members to cooperate With and align the cutting edge of the razor blade and having a central retainer tongue adapted to be inserted into the enlarged end slot in said blade holder and having flaring guiding ends to engage and grip the adjacent edges of the blade holder, the resilient lateral portions of said guard engaging the other side of the cooperating blade holder portion and formed with detents to releasably hold the guard in assembled position.

a pivotally connected hinge support, a hinge pin embraced by integral portions of said hinge support, a resilient sheet metal blade holder connected to said hinge pin and having resilient blade gripping lips and formed with a guard inserting slot having enlarged slot ends, a removable razor blade engaged by said gripping lips, and a resilient sheet metal guard having blade aligning members to cooperate with and align the razor blade and having a central retainer tongue formed with a bent up grip and adapted to be in serted into the enlarged end slot in said blade holder and gri the edges of said slot in connection with tfie resilient lateral p0rtions of said guard.

In safety razors, a sheet metal handle, a pivotally connected hinge support, a hinge pin, a resilient sheet metal blade holder connected to said hinge pin and having resilient blade grippinoF lips and formed with a uard inserting s ot having enlarged slot en s, a removable razor blade engaged by said gripping lips, and a resilient sheet metal guard having blade aligning inem bers to cooperate with and align the razor blade and having a central retainer' tongue adapted to be inserted into the enlarged end slot in said blade holder and grip the edges of said slot in connection with the resilient lateral portions of said guard.
7 In safety razors, a sheet metal handle, a pivotally connected resilient sheet metal blade holder having resilient blade gripping lips and formed with a guard inserting slot having laterall enlarged slot ends, a removable razor blade engaged by said grip ping lips, and a detachable resilient sheet metal guard having blade aligning members to cooperate with and align the razor blade and having a central retainer tongue formed with a bent up grip and adapted to be inserted into the enlarged end slot in said blade holder and grip the edges of said slot in connection with the resilient lateral portions of said guard.

In safety razors, a sheet metal handle, a pivotally connected blade holder having resilient blade gripping lips and formed with a guard inserting slot having laterally enlarged slot ends, a removable razor blade engaged by said gripping lips, and a detachable resilient sheet metal guard having a central retainer tongue adapted to be inserted into the enlarged end slot in said blade holder and gri the edges of said slot in connection With te resilientvlateral portions of said guard.
9. In safety razors, a holder having resilient blade gripping lips toengage a razor blade. and formed with a guard inseiting slot, and a detachable resilient sheet metal guard having a eential retainer tongue adapted to loe inserted into Jhe enlarged end slot in said blade lioldei' and grip the edges of said slot in connection with the resilient lateral portions of said guard.
