PLUG FOR BASINS AND TUBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913'.
Application filed August 6, 1912. Serial No. 713,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. TUCKER, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Sierra -Madre, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Plug for Basins and Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a plug or closure means by which the outlet or drain pipe of abasin or tub is closed. Ordinarily, plugs used for this purpose are secured to the end of a chain, which chain is attached to a portion of the tub adjacent to the rim thereof. Then a chain is used, as above referred to, it frequently happens that the chain becomes entangled in the clothes or other articlesbeing washed in the tub, or in cases where a chain is used in a hand basin, it frequently happens that the hands come in contact with the same and dislodge the plug from the drain pipe, thereby permitting the contents of the basin to flow out of the same.
One of the main objects of my invention is to provide a plug for drain pipes which is movably supported to a fixed member adjacent to the drain pipe in such a manner that the mounting for the plug affords comparatively little or no obstruction within the basin.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only: Figure 1 is a vertical, perspective view of the upper end of a drain pipe, showing a plug mounted thereon embodying a form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, of the upper end of a drain pipe, showing the plug therein in closed position in full lines and in open position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of my invention.
1 designates the drain pipe provided at its upper end with a circular flange 2, which drain pipe extends upwardly through a basin or tub indicated in dotted lines at 3 in Fig. 2, the circular flange 2 being in engagement with the upper face of the bottom of the tub or basin 3. The circular flange 2 is provided with an upwardly extending lug 1 to which is pivotally connected, by means of a hinge 5, a flat plate or arm 6. The arm 6 is provided with an elongated slot 7 adapted to receive a stem 8, the lower. end of which extends into and is molded in a plug 9 of rubber, or other similar material, which plug 9 is tapered, as indicated at 10, so that the same may freely enter the upper end 11 of the drain pipe 1, which u per end 11 is similarly tapered so that t e plug 9 when in closed position is seated firmly within the end of the drain pipe, thereby closing the same. The elongated slot 7 in the plate 6 is provided for the purpose of permitting a relative movement between the plate or arm 6 and the plug 9, so that the plug 9 may readily adapt itself to enter the drain pipe, as heretofore de scribed. The stem 8 is provided with a split ring 14 for disengaging the plug from the drain pipe, and also prevents detachment of the plug from the arm or plate 6.
Should the plug 9 become worn, thereby permitting a leakage of water from the tub to the drain pipe, the plug 9 may be removed from the arm 6 by opening the split ring 14, thereby permitting the stem 8 to pass through the opening in the arm 6 and a new plug to be placed on the arm.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the flange 2 is provided with an elongated eye 15 adapted to receive the inturned ends 16 of an arm 17 formed of a single piece of wire, the central portion of which wire is twisted, as shown at 18, and the inner end of which is formed into an eye indicated at 19. The eye 19 is adapted to receive a stem 20, which stem 20 is secured to a plug 21, the stem-20 being further provided with a ring 22 in the upper end thereof above the arm 17 for the purpose of providing handle-means for operating the plug.
In the form of device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when it is desired to close the drain pipe, the plug is placed in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, in which position, it is to be noted, there is no projection which might be struck by the hands or caught by clothes or articles in such a manner that the plug would be caused to leave the end-of the drain pipe and open the same. WVhen it is desired to open the drain pipe, the ring 14: is grasped and the plug 9 raised upwardly thereby until the plug assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The operation of the form shown in Fig. 3 is the same as that heretofore described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2, the arm 17 in Fig. 1 having a pivotal movement on the eye 15 by virtue of the ends 16 of the arm 17 which extend into the eye 15 in which they are free to turn. v
What I claim is 1. In combination, a tub, a drain pipe therefor, a lug on said drain pipe, an arm pivotally mounted on said lug, said arm having an opening therein, a plug adaptedto enter the end of said drain pipe, a stem on said plug extending loosely through the opening in said arm, and means on said stem for preventing said arm from disengagement With said stem.
2. In combination, a tub, a drain pipe therefor, a plug adapted to enter the end of said drain pipe, a flange on said drain pipe, a lug extending upwardly from said flange, an arm pivotally mounted on said lug, said arm having an elongated opening therein, a stem 011 said plug extending up-,
