To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HATTIE E. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Star township, in the county of Coffey and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in PlugLifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plug lifters for sinks, basins, wash tubs and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective device of this character comprising a single strand of wire corresponding to the contour of the vessel and being provided with an oifset lip or projection adapted to engage an offset member provided upon the vessel whereby the lifter may be sustained in its elevated position, thereby retaining the plug out of engagement with the basin out-let.
lVith the above and other objects in View which will be more apparent as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction of elements hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View through an ordinary basin or the like illustrating the improvement in applied position thereon, and also indicating by the dotted lines the position of the lifter and plug when the latter is removed from the outlet opening. Fig.2is a perspective view of the lifter. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the lifter sustaining element.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates a suitable vessel, such as a wash basin, being provided with the usual outlet 2, normally closed through the medium of a plug 3. The plug 3 is of the ordinary construction and is provided with a suitable eye 4, positioned upon its upper face and adapted for the reception of a suitable link 5.
The basin 1 is provided with a suitable U-shaped bail 6, positioned adjacent its upper face and secured to the said basin through the medium of threaded members 7 or in any other preferred or desired man ner.

This lifter 8 is preferably constructed of a single strand of suitable wire having its lower end provided with an eye 9 which is adapted to engage with the link 5 of the plug 3 and the said member is provided with a curved or arcuate body portion adapted to correspond with the cross sectional contour of the vessel 1. The member 8 is bent upon itself to provide a projecting lip 10 and the portion of the wire extending above this lip is also bent to form a suitable handle 11.
When it is desired to raise the plug 3 away from the outlet 2 so as to allow the water within the vessel 1 to be drained therefrom, the handle 11 of the member 8 is drawn upwardly until the offset portion providing the lip 10 is raised above the bail 6. The member 8 is then allowed to slide downwardly within the vessel until the lip 10 engages the connecting portion of the bail member 6, thus sustaining the member 8 upon the said, bail to effectively retain the plug 3 away from the outlet opening 2. When the water has been drained from the vessel 1, the handle 11.0f the member 8 is raised upwardly so as to disengage the lip 10 from the bail 6 and the said member 8 is allowed to slide downwardly within the said basin and in so doing tilt the plug 3 until the latter engages the outlet opening 2 and effectively closes the same. By reference to the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing it will be noted that the tongue or offset 10 of the member 8 is so arranged in relation to the bail 6 of the vessel 1 that when the said offset is positioned upon the bail the plug 3 is sustained at an inclination directly above the outlet 2, so it will be apparent that when the member 8 is disengaged from the bail 6 the plug 3 will be readily glided into position upon the outlet 2.
