STEAM CHECK- APPLICATION FILED NOV-29. 191s.
"v'1 59 Patented Mar. 19,1918\ WITNESSES ATTORN EY I LEROY E. GRAIZIGER-,OF: MAUSTONyWISCONSIN;
stream-canon.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 11:11. 19, 1918.
Application filed November 29, 1916. Serial No. 134,190.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, Lenov E. GRAIZTGER, a citizen of e the United States, residing at Mauston, in the county of Juneau and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Checks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to steam checks for pots, kettles, or the like, and has for its object to provide a device which may be inserted and held within the mouth of the kettle or the like, to form a valve controlled closure for said kettle whereby the action of steam through the mouth is prevented, said valve at the same time permitting the entrance of Water when the kettle is to be filled.
In addition to the foregoing, my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are desig-' nated by the same characters'of reference throughout the several views in which they appear:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly broken away, of a kettle illustrating the application thereto of my invention, and
Fig. 2, is a view in bottom plan on an enlarged scale of the device per se.
\Vith reference to the drawings, 1 indicates a conventional form of kettle having its mouth or inlet opening in'the upper por tion thereof, said opening being surrounded by a ledge 2. The kettle, may be provided with a cover 3 separately secured to the kettle as indicated at 4. said cover being designed to form a closure for the mouth of the kettle.
My invention comprises a body member 5 in the form of an inverted substantially frusto-conical member, said member being formed from sheet metal with its larger end flaredto form an annular flange 6 adapted to rest upon the ledge 2 of the kettle when the device is inserted in the mouth thereof.
The body member thus provides in effect a funnel, the smaller end of which is formed with an opening 7. A valve is provided for said opening in the form of a disk 8 having the leaf 9 of a hinge member secured thereto adjacent its periphery. The other member 10 of the hinge is secured exteriorly to the inclined wall of the body member, said hinged members being held in engagement by means of a pintle 11. passed therethrough. A' coil spring 12 encircles said pintle with its ends resting against the members of the hinge urging the valve against the under side of the body member thereby forminga closure for the opening 7.
As set forth above the device is inserted in the mouth of a kettle with its smaller end extending thereinto, and its annular flange 6 resting upon the ledge 2 of the kettle. Upon such engagement. the spring catches 13 disposed at oppositesides of the body mem her are designed to automatically engage beneath the ledge 2 to retain the device in place upon the kettle. The cover 3 may then be moved in place to form an additional closure for the kettle.
The theory of operation is that the opening 7 in the body member being at all times normally closed by the valve 8, exit of steam from the opening in the pot, or any other place except through the spout is prevented. In this manner. the cover may be removed without possibility of scalding the hands.
\Vhen the kettle is to be filled. the weight of the water poured into the body member,
5 of the device depresses the valve 8 and permits the water to flow into the kettle, the
7 water forming a seal and preventing the escape of steam.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A steam check including an inverted frusto-conical member open at its top and bottom. a peripheral flange formed thereon to engage the top edge of the kettle opening to support the steam checlna pair of diametrically opposed leaf springs secured at one of their ends exteriorly of the steam lower end of the check to prevent the escheck with their free ends extending upcape of steam.
wardly in spaced relation to the body of the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature check whereby the check may be inserted in in presence of two Witnesses.
the mouth of the kettle, the springs sprung LEROY E. GRAIZIGER. inward and then released to engage the un- Witnesses:
der side of the edges of the kettle opening, FRANK H. HANSON,
and a spring pressed check valve for the FRANCES B. GALVIN.
