Description

J. BOYD.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.15, 1912.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
1w, my@ M "UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES BOYD, OF DETROIT, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO BROWN AND BIGELOI/V, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed January 15, 1912. Serial No. 671,371.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it knoivn that I, .IQ-mins BOYD, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a display device ivhich is adapted to be vused primarily for advertising purposes to display a commodity or other sample and printed matter'. The device may be exhibited upon the lapel of a coat or upon any object by attaching it thereto by means of a pin or other fastening.
In the accompanying drawingfforming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of my invention; F ig. 2 is a sectional view taken upon the line X-X, Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the conveX shell, the center of which is adapted to expose a commodity or object to be dis-,
played by the display device, and Fig. 4 is a sectional vieiv of the jacket.
A represents a convex metal shell Which is formed With a centrally disposed opening B and a ange .C around its outer edge. The shell A has a transparent Celluloid jacket D which is adapted to fit snugly over the surface of said shell and has an opaque circular band E of paper or other suitable material the opening F in its center registering With the centrally disposed opening B in said shell, said band forming a convenient surface for displaying advertising printed matter which is visible through and protected by the acket. i
G represents a concave back made of metal or other suitable material in the form of a receptacle Which is cent-rally mounted upon a` pin I-I for fastening the device on any support desired.
The iexible jacket D of Celluloid or other transparent material is turned in over the inner edge of the convex shell and said shell with the covering in place is then secured over the back by turning the edge of the shell by rolling or beading it to secure the parts together. Before the parts have been secured in the manner stated, the commodity such as grain is placed in the shell and is visible through the opening B and jacket.
It is obvious that the mode of securing the parts together and of holding the commodity or object so as to be displayed through the opening B may be variously modified Within the spirit of my invention and it is further obvious that any means in place of the pin disclosed may be employed for supporting the device in place when in use.
Obviously it is an advantage to make the jacket out of thin flexible material such as Celluloid because it is more compact than rigid material such as glass and will stand knocks and rough treatment Without breaking.
In accordance With the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together With the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth Within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. A display device comprising a metal shell With an opening therein forming a front piece, a back member cooperating With said front piece to form a cavity in Which an object is adapted to be displayed, the edge of one of said parts being beaded into en- -gagement with the edge of the other part, a
band of printed material overlying the surface of said shell, a jacket of thin, flexible and transparent material over said shell and band, the edges of said jacket and band of printed material being engaged between the engaging edges of said shell and back member and means of attachment secured to said back member.
2. A device of the class set forth, comprising a convex metal shell With an opening therein, a transparent Celluloid cover over said opening having an opaque marginal lining over the shell, a concave back forming With said shell and cover a receptacle in which an object may be displayed and means of attachment mounted upon said back.
3. A device of the class set forth, comprising a shell with an opening therein, a flexible transparent jacket over said shell and x) the Qpelmlg therein, :u1 opaque baud bel in tesmnmny vwheyeol, I huye signed my tween' sald'shell :md Jacket and hzwulg :L name to dus speelcahon, 1u `the presence planted VLnlpresslon to be chsplayed through oi two subsel'lblng wltnesses.
und protected by said jacket and a back JAMES BOYD. member by which said band, shell andjacket Vtuesses:
are carried, said buck and shell being adapt- L. F. BULLIS,
ed to hold an object between them. S. D. ENSIGN.
