Description

I. RUDOLPH.
PLAQUE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 5. 1915.

PLAQUE.
Application filed May 5, 1915.
To (ZZZ whom it n {W concern:
Be it known that I, Isanon RUDOLPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plaques, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plaques, the object of the invention being to provide an ornamental plaque having an ornamented felt surface in combination with a backing which holds the felt in proper shape, and which results in an extremely ornamental device.
A further object is to provide a plaque of the character stated having a facing of felt suitably colored, the coloring of the felt cooperating with the stenciling or other form of ornamentation to produce an ornamental picture or design, and enable such devices to be placed on the market at an extremely low price.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction. and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. .a
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a face view of my improved plaque, and
Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section through the center thereof.
1 represents a backing which may consist of two disks of cardboard glued or otherwise secured together or may be formed in any approved manner to provide the neces sary rigidity for the plaque. This backing 1 is of general concavo-convex shape, and its edge is inclosed in a strip 2.
On the face of the backing 1, a sheet 3 of felt is secured, preferably by adhesive. The felt sheet 3 is of the same. shape as the backing, but is preferably smaller in diameter, so that it exposes the strip 2, and as the felt and the strip are preferably of different colors, the effect of the edge is pleasing and attractive.
The outer surface. of the left is stenciled, printed, or ornamented in any approved manner. The felt readily lends itself to a wide variety of ornamentation, and as the felt may be of various colors, its coloring will.
Specification of Letters Patent.

cooperate with the stenciling to' produce various ornamental designs.
A covering sheet 1 is preferably secured to the rear face of the backing 1, and may be of any suitable material, and a hanger 5 is secured to the rear of the plaque so as to permit it to be conveniently hung on the wall or other place.
The felt 3 readily conforms in shape to the concaved face of the backing, and the stenciling or other ornamentation thereon is not disfigured or injured in the slightest by the shaping of the felt to conform to the shape of the backing, as the felt is of such a pliable nature that it will conform to the curvature of the backing, and present a smooth, neat, and attractive appearance.
l/Vhile I have referred to the sheet 3 as felt, I would have it understood that I use this term in the broadest sense to cover any similar material which has a felt surface.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. As a new article of manufacture, a circular plaque having a circular backing and an outer circular ornamented felt facing of smaller'diameter than and secured concentrically to the backing, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a circular plaque comprising a backing, a facing sheet of felt on the outer face of the backing, said felt having on its outer face an ornamental stenciled design, said facing being of concave-convex shape of smaller surface area than and terminating short of the edge of the backing, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a plaque comprising a backing, a felt facing sheet secured to the backing, said sheet being of the same shape as the backing but of smaller area than the backing so as to expose as a margin a portion of the backing throughout the edge thereof, said hacking and sheet being of different colors, substantially as described.
4:. As a new article of manufacture, a plaque comprising a backing, a facing sheet having an ornamental design thereon and of smaller area than said backing, a covering sheet secured to the rear face of said backing, and an edging strip bent around the edge of said backing and having its edges respectively secured between the facing sheet and the front face of the backing,
and between the rear face of the backing and the inner face of the covering sheet, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
ISADOR RUDOLPH.
