KNocKnowN BARREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Applicationjled November 11, 1311. Serial No. 659,772.
'To all whom it may concern has for its'object to provide a barrel which can be used for a number of times and when not in use can be taken apart and folded into a compact bundle so as to occupy the minimum space in shipping and will also render the same easy to handle.
Another object of this invention is to produce a barrel of this character which \v'll possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and ar rangements of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out inthe claim and shown in the accompanying drawings in wh1ch Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barre constructed in accordance with my invention; Big. 2 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings 1 indicates the body of the barrel which is made of a heavy wire mesh, having its edges reinforced by means of the marginal strips of sheet iron 2 secured to the edge of the Wire mesh as shown at 3. These strips 2 are secured to the wire by welding the same, or any other suitable means may be employed.
In forming the body of thebarrel the strips at the ends of the wire mesh are riveted together as shown at- 4 and the ears 5 are formed at each end and disposed on each side of the body portion and adapted to overlap when the ends are secured together to make a stronger connection. Vhen the cylindrical body of the barrel is'formed, a water proof paper tube 6 is then inserted in the body, said. tube being of su'fiicient size to fit snugly within the cylinder. This tube 6 is formed from a single sheet of heavy water-- proof paper of the desired size, having its ends glued or otherwise secured together to form the cylindrical tube 6. The circular wooden heads 7 are provided of the required size to fit snugly within the upper and lower edges of the body and are held in place by means of the screws 8 passing through the openings 9 in the strips at the upper and lower edges of the body and engaging in the heads.
These heads are fitted into the ends of the body of the barrel so that they come below the outer edge and leave an extending flange 10. Screws or nails can be used to hold the head in place but screws are preferably used as they can be quickly and easily removed when the barrel is taken apart for shipment.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the, barrel setup ready for use and when it is desired to fold thesame for return shipment the heads are taken out by removing the screws 8, the
paper tube 6 is then removed and the rivets.
at are cut to allow the .body portion of the barrel to be flattened out and these different parts can be tied into compact bundles.
W'hile I have shown and described the preferred-form of my invention it will be seen that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A barrel frame comprising a rectangular body portion formed of end and side flexible strips.- a 'wire mesh secured to the inner marginal edges of said strips, the said side strips and wire mesh being rolled upon themselves to form a tubular body, the side strips being of greater width than the end strips and extending beyond the outer edges thereof the extensions formed upon said yond the Cilfiifiill heads suhstantieltyes end side strips overlapping one another and con for the pzrrpose specified 10 nested together, the said end strips being In. testinmny whereof l'lereamte affix my connected together, circular heads deteohsignature in the presence of two witnesses,
ably secured Within the medial portion of t EREEST CLIFTGN MORRES. the end strips, a flexible tube mounted with Witnesses in said body between the said heads, and J AMES'SA'WYER,
the said side strips adapted to extend oe- G G SANDUSKY.
