Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.I AMES E. DARNALL, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OFOOLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLY-BRUSHES.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109,720, dated November 29, 1870.
' the slitted paper is wound upon the stem or handle.
The same letters of reference, where'emyployed in the several gures, indicate identical parts.
The nature of my invention, which relates to the manufacture of .what are termed ilybrushes,77 consists in the peculiar manner, hereinafter to be specifically pointed out, of attaching the slitted sheets of paper by means of a string, over which they are folded, to the stem or handle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The iiy-brush is made of paper, with a suitable wooden stem or handle. In constructing it, several sheets of paper, A, about -fifteen inches wide, more or less, and of suitable length-say eighteen inches-are attached to one another lengthwise by pasting them together along a narrow belt midway between their sides. rIhe sheets thus united are folded l lengthwise by doubling them, and a string, B, passed between them through the fold, which is held in place by pasting the leaves of the innermost sheet over it, and by loops b passed through the leaves and tied over the string, as shown in Fig. 2.
'I he paper employed for the manufacture of these brushes being very thin, I strengthen the fold by a narrow strip, A, of strong Manila paper, pasted to the outer sheet around the string. The sheets of paper are then slitted transversely to within close proximity to the string, and in this condition fastened -to the stem C by tying one end of the string B firmly to its upper end, and winding it with the appended paper spirally around the stem, to which the other end of the string is then also tied. In this manner a round brush is formed, appearing as shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article lof manufacture, the withindeseribed fly-brush, composed of slitted sheets of paper A, pasted together and folded over a string, B, by which they are secured to the handle O, in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES E. DARNALL.
