To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, HARRISON B. l/VALTER,
a citizen of the-UnitedStates, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this spec1 fication.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes of fibre or paper board and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention relates more particularly to the typeof collapsible box which is set up for packing with one end attached to the body and the other end open, and consists of an elongated mat or blank creased to be folded to form a tubular body and capable of being collapsed upon itself; and of separate end parts, which may be included with the collapsed body in a fiat package when supplied to the user or packer. The general type of box is shown in Letters Patent heretofore granted to me, No. 1,055,243, dated March 4th, 1913, and No. 1,125,782, dated January 19, 1915.
The object of the present invention is to provide certain novel and improved features in a box of the kind whereby its strength and resistance to rough handling is greatly increased. This and other advantages of the invention will be more particularly pointed out as I proceed with my specification.

Referring now to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings :10 indicates the body'of the box.
This is a rectangular tube, open at its ends, with two narrow sides 11, Hand two wider sides 12, 12,one of the narrow sides, in the ex ample illustrated, being provided with a narrow, lateral flap extension 13, which is attached to the proximate side 12 by means of staples or in any other convenient manner. The said body is made from a mat or blank of heavy fibre or paper board which is creased along parallel lines spaced at the required distances to define the several sides of the box body and the flap extension 13. The said creases permit the mat or blank tobe folded into box form when it is setup for use and to be collapsed upon itself when the boxes are shipped to the user in a stack of flat packages, in a wellknown manner.
14 indicates the end members of the box. These each consist of two pieces 15, 16 shown in plan in Figure 5. The piece 15 is made of the internal cross-sectional area of the box, with the addition of flange extensions 15, 15 at its sides defined by creases 15", 15 The piece 16 is of a like area, with the addition of flange extensions 16, 16 defined by creases 16, 16 The two pieces are so cut from the mats or strips from which they are made, with reference to the direction in which their flanges extend, that when placed one upon the other as shown in Fig. 5, with the flange extensions located on all sides of the combination presented by the two, the grain of the fibre or paper board in one piece will extend at an angle, preferably a right angle, to the grain of the other.
The two pieces are secured in an end of the tubular body in the assembled relation just described, with the several flange extensions attached to the inside parts of said sides by means of staples or otherwise (see Figures 8 and 4) as in the case of the single piece end parts of the boxes shown in the patents hereinbeforereferred to. One end is applied as soon as the body is set up and the other end is applied after the box has been packed.
The two piece construction of the ends of the boX makes :1 very strong and rigid structure, capable of greatly increasedr'esistance to breakage or deformation, due to rough handling. ,This strength is further added to by the arrangement of the two pieces comprising the end closure, With the grain of one piece running at an angle to the grain of the other piece,the relative Weakness of the one piece in one direction being mani festly reinforced by the relative strength of the other piece in that direction.
Another advantage of the improved box hes in the fact that the pieces comprising 1.
