DRESS FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 6, 1912,

N i ii'- ffffiiiiiiiii MARCUS CHAIKEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRESS-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed January 6, 1912. Serial No. 669,834.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARoUs CHAIKEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dress-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastening for the back of dresses and waists, which can be either permanently affixed, or be removably attached to the dress or waist; that will hold the parts of the dress or waist close together from neck to waist band be adjusted by the wearer alone in one movement of the parts; and that is durable, cheap and easily fixed or attached to any dress or waist.
The manner in which I accomplish my object is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of the position of my invention in a dress when in place. 011 a body. Fig. 2 is a vertical elevation of the removable locking parts of my invention separate from the parts on the dress; Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an inside vertical elevation of part of a dress and the several parts of my invention attached thereto. Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 5-5 Fig. 4.
In the drawings 6 indicates the body of a dress, 7 the opening line in the back and the dotted lines in Fig. 1 indicate the position of my invention when the body is fastened.
In Fig. 9. the part 8 is a tag or small ring attached to the lapover 9 at the top of the part 10, the purpose of which is hereinafter described. The part 1.0 is made of spring material preferably of metal, of a length adapted to the body of the dress. The edges 11 are inverted the whole length as shown in section in Fig. 2, and the intervening space 12 is covered at the top by the lapover 9. Two members 13 and 14 shown in Fig. 4.- are made preferably of spring metal and are perforated as indicated by the small dots for the passage of thread whereby they may be sewed to the body of the dress. One edge of each member is reverted the whole length and thereby adapted to be slidably locked inside the edges 11 of the locking part 10 as shown in Fig. 5. In the bent over edge 16 of each of the members 13 and 14, and in the face of each part are a plurality of slots 18 adapted for the passage of lateral extensions of strips hereinafter mentioned. Sewed on the inside edges of the opening of the body are two strips 19 of flexible material having lateral extensions 20. These extensions are adapted to be passed through the slots 18 of the members 13 and 14; and be fastened by the buttons 21 to the body, whereby the members 13 and 14 are removably secured to the body of the dress. When these members 13 and 14 are secured on the body either by being sewed directly on the dress, or by the extensions 20 these parts are drawn together and the part 10 slipped downward over the members 13 and 141 to the waist line whereby the dress is closed at the back.
To remove the member 10 the tag 8 is seized by the fingers and the part drawn up, and the parts 13 and 14: thereby released and dress opened.
That I claim is A dress fastener consisting of five members, two of said members consisting of narrow strips of flexible material adapted to be sewed permanently to the edge of the opening of the back of the dress, said strips having lateral extensions adapted to be buttoned to the dress some distance back from the opening thereof, two metallic members each. member having an outwardly reverted edge and lateral slots in the reverted edge and body of said members adapted for the passage therethrough of the lateral extensions of said flexible strips, whereby said metallic members are removabiy attached to said dress, and a member having inwardly reverted edges whereby said member is adapted to slide longitudinally over the outward reverted edges of said metallic members and thereby drawing said members, and fixed members on the dress close together and locking said parts as described.
