UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL W. FRENZ, 0F MAUSTON, WISCONSIN.
FOLDING CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18, 1913.
Application. filed May 15, 1912. Serial. No. 697,409.
It is the obj ect of the present invention to provide a cup which can be folded up for convenient carrying, but which is provided with a handle whereby it may be convenient-ly held while in use.
More particularly my invention comprises a telescoping cup with a handle at the side, pivotally mounted on the inside of the cup and having a spring catch for engagement with the rim of the cup when the handle is in its normal or useful position, the cup be ing provided with a cover or closure which can he slipped on over the rim when the cup is not in use.
The details of my invention will be better understood from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the cup in folded condition. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the cup when extended, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the hinge and catch.
The cup shown in the drawings is made of telescoping metal sections 1, 2, 3 and 4:, the uppermost or largest of which is provided at its upper edge with a rolled bead or lip 5. WVhen the cup is to be used, the telescoping sections are pulled out, as shown in Fig. 2. The bottom section 1 is provided with an annular swage 6 carrying an an nular dished base 7 flaring outwardly at 8 and having a reverse bend or head 9. When the cup is in folded condition, as shown in Fig. 1, the larger or outermost section 4. fits snugly on the flared portion 8 of the annular base and rests on the heading 9.
A handle 10 for the cup, of suitable size and shape, is pivotally mounted at 11 to an angular bracket 12 secured to the inner wall of the topmost section 4. of the cup and preferably riveted thereto at 13 with the upper face of the bracket substantially flush with the upper edgeof the annular rim or lip 5 of the cup. A curved steel sprlng 14 1s riveted at 15 to the upper face of the handle 10 and has a downwardly curved extension 16 pasing through a slot or opening in the handle 10 and yieldingly engaging the lip 5 to serve as a retaining spring for the handle 10 when the cup is in use. Bracket 12. is of such length that the pivotal point 11 lies well within the cup and permits the handle 10 to fold down, as shown in Fig. 1, without striking-the tops of the lower telescoping sections of the cup. Also by having the pivotal mounting remote from the rim or lip of the cup, the rim is left smooth and uniform throughout and well adapted to receive a cover. This cover may be of the I simple design shown in Fig. 1 as having a flared down-turned flange 17 for engagement with the lip 5 and having an upwardly dished central portion 18 giving clearance for the hinge 11 and also adding to the ornamental design of the structure. By virtue of the smooth and unobstructed character of the lip of the cup, this cover may be slipped on or ofl', just as if the cup were notprovided with a folding handle.
The cup may be made of sheet metal, such as aluminum and the Various parts may be shaped up by the usual metal working processes, such as spinning, pressing and the like.
I am aware that various changes can be made in the details of construction and'my invention contemplates such changes as may be made within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim 1. A cup provided with a folding handle, said handle being pivotally mounted within the cup, and provided with retaining means yieldingly engaging the rim of the cup to secure said handle against upward movement.
2. A cup, a bracket mounted within said cup and extending inward, a handle pivotally connected with said bracket, and adapted to fold down wholly within the cup and a spring carried by said handle and engaging the rim of the cup when the handle is in its normal position to secure said handle against upward movement.
3. A cup provided on its inner face with an inwardly extending support, a handle pivoted to said support and lying acrossthe lip of the cup, and a curved spring carried by said handle, and yieldingly engaging said lip to secure the handle against upward movement when in its extended and normal position.
4. The combination of a folding cup comprising a plurality of telescoping sections, the uppermost of said sections having a rolled lip, a support within said cup and extending inwardly beyond the tops of the smaller sections when in folded position, a handle pivotally mounted to said support, said handle being arranged for folding downward wholly within the cup when not in use, leaving an unobstructed cup rim, said handle swinging outward to rest across the lip of the cup, a spring passed through said handle and yieldingly engaging the lip of the cup to hold said handle in its useful position, and a cover fitting completely over the cup rim and wholly removable from the cup when desired.
5. A cup provided with a handle, a bracket projecting inward from the cup rim to pivotally support said handle in position for folding down wholly within the cup to leave an unobstructed rim, means for securing said handle against upward movement when in extended position, and a cover having a down-turned flange for engaging the rim of the cup when the handle is in closed position, said cover being wholly removable from the cup when desired.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name to this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
