PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO TOLBERT N.
RICHARDSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAN LID R Tor.
. Toul/ w/lom it muy wurm-n:
Be it known that I. (lninnns T. llloo'l'aEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityA and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl *ania, have invented a new and useful Can Lid or Top, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in making the lid or top of a can partly transparent, whereby the contents of the can may be viewed or shown and inspected from the exterior, said lid being adapted to vhold a piece of glass or other transparent material employed ina firm and convenient novel manner without soldering or attached fastening members.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the importan-t instrumentalities thereof 'may be varied, and so it 1s to be understood that,
the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described. l
Figure Lrepresents a perspective view of a can-lid embodying'my invention. Fig. 2 represents a diametrical section thereof on the line Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents what may be termed a blank from which the lid and its novel features areproduced.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the lid of a can, the same being open at the.
top and having on the circumferential w ll.
of said opening the inturned rim 2 whichis joined by a bend on the exterior.` thereof with the inturned rim 3, said rims being separated forming between them t'he channel 4 in which is received the peripheral portion of the piece 5 of glass which closes the open top of the lid froln below, said rims being swaged or compressed against the upper and lower faces of said portions of the piece 5, they firmly holding the latter in position.
In the manufacture of thevarticle, I employ the shape shown in Fig. 2, the same consisting of an annular piece of metal having itsy center cut-out forming ythe open top of the lid, the fiange or wall 6 of said opening, the vertical side 7 extending downwardly from said flange, the top inclined` wall or plate member S bent outwardly from Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aue. .24, 1915.
Application filed June 13, 41914. Serial No. 844,987.
v piece 5 of glass is seated, the inturned rim i 3 having its inner terminal joining the innel' terminal of said wall S by the crimp 10, the rim 3 thus joining the upper member of said crimp and being seated om the lower member of said crimp whereby 1t is firmly sustained in position and with itl a piece of glass or other transparent material, it being seen that there is an opening in the top, the crimp l0 forming vthe lower wall thereof, and the edges 2 of the channel et forming the upper wall thereof, and as the piece of glass which closes said opening is held by its peripheral portion in said channellit rests on the lower wall 8 by the crimp 10,011 the annular part 6, said part and crimp forming a strong support for said peripheral portion so that the piece of glass is not liable to rattle, break-down or sag, it being noticed also that the periphery of the piece 5 is covered by the rims 2 and 3, and the exterior bend of the latter, so as not to be exposed. Furthermore, the crimp l0 forms a stiff connection for the lower rim 3 with the wall 8, and as said lower rim joins the upper member Iof said crimp l0 and is seated on the lower mem-l ber thereof as has been stated, the rims 2 and 3 which form said channel are firmly supported from below on said crimp and thus on the wall 8, which is inturned from the. side rim 9 of the lid whereby said rims y.are not liable lto yield' and break downwardly, and thus the piece of glass, whose periphery occupies said channel and its adjacent portion is sustained on the lower-- rim 3 vand consequently the crimp 10, so that it is not liable to be fractured, as the latter forms a rigid seat for the rims 2 and 3, and consequently for the peripheral portion of said piece of glass received therein.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A can top having. therein an opening, a rim on its periphery, a plate-member eX- tending inwardly from Said riln, a crinip 0n the inner periphery of saldplate member forming the lower Wall of sald opening, a
rim rising Jfrom said crimp having therein an inwardly facing Channel, the upper edge of said channeled rnn forming the top Wall of said opening, and a piece of transparent material having its peripheral portion 0C- cupying said channel, resting on said crimp and closing said opening.
