Description

F. H. DIGKSON.
v CHAIN WRENCH.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY12,1012.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Al/omey I INVENTOR F itANK H. DICKSON, OF OSWEGO, NEW YORK.
CHAIN WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK H. I )1onson, a citizen otthe United States, residing at Oswe o in the count of'Oswe o'and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements 1n Chain i/Vrenches; and 1 do hereby declare the tollowmg to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it vappertains to make and use the same; I
My invention relates to an improvement in chain wrenches, andparticularly to improvements on'the construction disclosed in U. Patent, No. 1,023,198 granted to me f April 16, 1912.
In the patent above referred to the jaws are secured to the handle by a single bolt,
and the chain is secured to a boltpassing through the jaws, and blocks in advance of the handle. j
The object of this invention is to strengthen the wrench at the point where the chain is attached, and it consists in a handle, two
i is a view in elevation partly in section ofblocks each recessed to receive the end of the handle, between them and. each provided with two books, two jaws each recessed on its inner face to form seats for the blocks, two bolts both passing through the jaws, blocks and handle and a chain mounted on one of said bolts and adapted to engage the hooks on the blocks.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 my improved wrench. Fig. 2 isa view in longitudinal section, showing the bolts in elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section through thecenter of the jaws, showing the bolt in elevation. Fig. 4 is a View in elevation of one of the jaws. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of one of the blocks, and Fig. 6'is a view in section taken throughthc bearing for the center bolt but showing the shoulders continuous and the projection (3 cut away on'their outer sides and overlapping said shoulders. v
1 represents the aws, each of which is'elliptical in shape and provided with teeth or serrations'at both ends so that the wrench may be used either side up, and the jaws may be reversed end for end. Each jaw is recessed or provided with shoulders on its inner face as at 2, to receive the blocks 5, and the outer edges of the latter conform to the contour of the recess or shoulders at Specification of Letters Patent.

said recess it will be supported and sustained by engagement with thewalls of said recess or with said shoulders. If desired each flange or wall 3 of the recess 2 maybe cut away centrally as shown to-reeeive the angular projection (i at the front ends of the blocks, but this is not essential, as the angu lar projection may be cut away so as to,
overlap said walls.
5 are the blocks, one for each jaw proeach end of the jaw so that when seated in vided adjacent their. fron't'ends with the oppositely disposed angular projectionsti which terminate approximately tiushwith.,. the edges of the aws. lh'e portions of the aws in rear o1. theiangular pro ections 6;
conform to the shape of the'recesses in-the jaws at one side of the cent.er ,-so that when the parts'are, assembled, the jaws are, supported by the walls ofthe recesses 2. and
not by the bolts or either of them, the-latter serving primarily to holdthe parts in posi,
tion.
projection on the blockis shaped to form a The-rear or inner face of. each angular chain 8 engage as will'bc hereinafter ex plained, and each block is also provided on its inner-face with an angular recess to receive the squared end 9 (it-tho handle 10. The. squared end of the handle rests "between and in contact with both blocks. and within the angular recesses in the blocks,
and the latter rest within the jaws, hence it will be seen that all strains imparted to the jaws are transmitted directly to the handle through the blocks, and not? through the bolts.
The jaws, blocks and handle are secured together by two bolts 11 and 12. both of which pass through both jaws and blocks and through the handle which is enlarged as at 15 at both sides of bolt 11. Oneof these bolts is located approximately in the center of each jaw and the other to the rear of the center, which necessitates three boltholes in the jaws so as to permit a reversal of the latter end for end. Both bolts are preferably threaded on both ends and are secured in place by nuts, and the bolt 12 is preferably enlarged at its center so as to term shoulders 12 which bear against the inner faces of the blocks and tend to prevent a collapsing action of the jaws when under heavy strains. The'enlarged center of the bglt 12 rests within the hole in the handle and the latter is bifurcated at its front end to receive the head-of link 13 of the chain 8.
The head of this link'is preterably' as wide 5 as the slot or bifurcation in the handle, so
they may be composed of ordi'nary looped chains as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The inner or adjacent faces ot the blocksare separated sufliciently for the reception of the links of the chain but not for the pintles 14. The hooks 7 are of a size and shape to enter between the pins of two adjacent links, or between the links of an'ordinary .0 looped chain, and engage the pintle, or the end of the next link thus locking the chain against the possibility of accidental displacement after it has been placed around a pipe or other object and put under tension.
'5 In the use of the wrench, the chain is passed around the pipe or other object to .be
turned and secured to the hooks 7. 'The,
chain therefore holds the serrated jaws *against' the pipe in such position that when 0 the lever or handle is, actuated the'teeth or serrations in the jaws will grip the pipe and I turn the same in the well known manner.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is I In a' chain pipe Wrench, the combination of a handle having an angular bifurcated end, two blocks each recessed to "receive the angular end ofthe handle and each provided with two blocks, two jaws each provided with abutments on its inner face to engage the edges of the block and form supports for the same, a bolt having an enlarged center with straight shoulders at the ends of the enlargement, the said bolt passing through the-jaws, blocks and bifurcated end of the handle, the shoulders on the bolt bearing against the inner faces of the blocks, a second bolt assing through, the jaws, blocks and hand e in rear of the shouldered bolt and a chain mounted on the enlarged portion of the shouldered bolt and adapted to engage the hooks on the blocks.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of'two subscribing witnesses. 9 FRANK H. DICKSON.
Witnesses: I
