To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY FOSTER LEEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stage-Screws, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved form of stage screw adapted for employment with stage scenery braces as customarily used,

misplaced; second, the convenient provision made for replacing of the screws when they become worn or damaged, and finally 1ts adaptation to use as an ordinary portable stage screw when desirable for special situations, etc. My invention is thus equally suited for dual use as a permanent and fixed part of scenery brace and as a separable hand screw of the ordinary type butwith the additional. feature of a detachable screw.

These and other features of myimproved device are shown in the accompanying drawing in which the reference characters of the description are applied to like parts in the diiferent views.

In the drawing Figure 1 illustrates in perspective the lower portion of a scenery brace having the device of my invention employed therewith and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation ofmy improved hand screw.

In the figures 1 indicates the lower end of the usualstage scenery brace having secured to it the curved foot-iron 2 having a plurality of apertures 3 therein to receive the securing screw, this being of the ordinary type in common use. Fit-ted to one of the apertures 3 is shown the hand-screw of my invention comprising the lower screw portion 5 having integrally formed therewith a flat collar flange 6 and an upwardly extending squared shank 8. The shank 8, as shown, passes upwardlythrough an aperture 3 of the foot iron and the screw handle-portion 10 is fitted thereon, so that they will turn together, by having its central collar portion 11 provided with a squared recess 12 snugly fitting the squared shank 8. it is permanently clamped by meansof a suitable set screw 15 carried in the portion 11 to be screwed home into small notches 16 formed in the squared screw shank 8. The

set screw 15 is desirably countersunk and round-headed so as not to interfere in the manipulation of the handle. In consequence of this arrangement it will be seen that my improved hand screw is permanently clamped on the foot iron 2, of simple construction and as ordinarily used, thus converting it into a complete attaching device in a most economical manner. F urthermore the. replacing of the screws 5 and the attachment of the hand-screw as a whole to the foot-iron is accomplished in a single operation or as aforesaid my improved hand screw may be used in the ordinary manner with the lower clamping flange 6resting on the foot iron. I

I am aware'that certain forms of stagescrews permanently secured to the foot-irons have been suggested, but those with which I am acquaint-ed were single-piece screws, so that when worn or broken the whole screw has to be thrown away, and thisis one of the disadvantages that I have overcome.

Having described my invention, I claim,

1. A stage screw comprising a screw ele-- ment, an upwardly extending squared shank integral with the screw element, a handle element having a recessed collar fitted to the shank to secure them to turn together and a set-screw in the collar to engage the shank for the permanent attachment of the screw and handle elements.

2. A stage screw comprising a screw element, a clamping portion on said screw element, an upwardly extending shank on the screw-element, a handle element, a cooperating clamping portion on the handle element,

said handle-element being recessed to reshank on one of the elements, and engaging means on the other elementto engage said shank to couple the parts together.

4;. A stage screw device for a scenerybrace having a foot-iron attached thereto, comprising a screw-elernent, a shank on the screw-element to upwardly extend through the foot-iron, a clamping surface on said screw-element to engage the under surface of the foot iron, a handle element to engage with the foot-iron upper surface, said handle element being recessed to receive the screw-shank and means to secure the handie and screw elements in a fixed relation.

5. A stage screw device for a scenerybrace having a foot iron attached thereto, comprising a screw-element, a squared shank on the screw-element to upwardly extend through the foot-iron, a clamping collar on the screw-element to engage the under surface of the foot iron, a handleele1nent, a cooperating clamping collar on the handleelement to engage the foot-iron upper surface, said handle-element having a squared recess fitted to the screw-shank thereby to turn together and a set screw carried by the handle-element to engage the shank and secure the parts.
