UNITED sira'rasrarrnn'r orator ALFRED DUNN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PNEUMATICALLY-PADDED BOXING-GLOVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED DUNN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Pneumatically -Padded Boxing-Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
Pneumatic padding has certain marked advantages over ordinary padding in boxing gloves, in that it is lighter, presents a cushion surface substantially uniform throughout and has greater flexibility, but difficulty has heretofore been experienced in applying such padding to boxing gloves because the inflated bag lying over the back of .the glove, affects the flexibility of the glove portion, and to a greater or less extent prevents the closing of the fingers and the clenching of the hand.
It is the object of my invention to overcome this difficulty so that all of the advantages of the pneumatic padding may be obtained without any loss in the flexibility of the glove portion and the general utility of the glove. This result I accomplish by providing a free space between the outer end of the pneumatic padding and the finger-end of the glove proper, which enables the fingers to be closed and the hand to be clenched without impediment by the padding. This free space is preferably formed by extending the outer end of the outer piece, which forms the pocket for the pneumatic bag, beyond the outer end of the inflated bag in a slack portion forming an unoccupied-pocket and having sufficient fullness to permit the required movement of the fingers and finger-end of the glove proper.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side eleva' tion of a boxing glove embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same.
The glove-portion a isof the usual form adapted to fit the hand. Secured to the back of the glove-portion is the piece 79, of leather or fabric, which has suflicient fullness to form the pocket which contains the padding, and which, in my construction, receives the pneumatic bag 0. This piece 6 is secured to the top of the glove-portion a Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 25,1909.

portion b at the top and, to this end, it is preferably extended loosely over the fingertip-end a of the glove portion and secured to the inner face of such end, as at (Z. The
pneumatic bag 0, preferably of rubber, is of I a proper size to fill, when inflated, the pocket between the outer piece I) and the glove portion a, but without filling the upper part- 6 of the pocket formed by the slack portion I). The portion 7) which is thus left full or slack permits the outer end a of the glove freely without impedimentfrom the pneumatic bag 0 and without affecting the efficiency of the bag as a pad on the back of the glove. This freedom of movement permits the fingers to be closed and the hand to be clenched, and this overcomes the difliculty been experienced with pneumatically padded gloves.
The pneumatic bag 6 is inserted through a slit f or opening provided for that purpose between the lower edge of the piece 5 and the wrist g of the glove portion, an may be provided with the usual tube h for the purpose of inflation, which may, after inflation be doubled over and inserted in the pocket i on the back of the wrist. details, however, form no part of my invention, the essential feature of which resides in the looseness at the point 6 between the outer end of the pneumatic bag and the finger-end of the glove proper, which enables the fingers to be closed and the hand to be properly clenched.
What I claim is as follows:
1. A pneumatically padded having a free space between the outer en of the pneumatic padding and the fingerend of the glove proper to enable the fingers to be closed and the hand to be clenched without impediment by the padding.
2. In a pneumatically padded boxingglove, tion, of an outer piece secured to the back thereof and forming a pocket for the padding, and a pneumatic bag inserted in said pocket, the upper portion of said pocket between the outer end of the bag and the finger-end of the glove-portion being empty to afford a free space.
boxingglove 3. In a pneumatically padded boxingwhich has heretofore These the combination with the glove porglove, the combination with the g1ove-p01'- the inflated bag and the finger-end of the tion, of an outer piece secured to the back glove-portion. 10 thereof and forming a pocket for the pad- In testimony of which invention, I hereding, and an inflated bag contained in said unto set my hand.
5 pocket, the upper end of said outer piece ALFRED DUNN.
