To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAN OKLOWSKI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to umbrellas, and.

the objects of my invention are to provide an umbrella that can be folded, collapsed or reduced in its longitudinal dimension to occupy a comparatively small space when not in use, and to furnish an umbrella with novel telescopic ribs and spreaders that are not liable to injure the cover of an umbrella, particularly when the same is folded.

Further objects of my invention are to provide a folding umbrella that has a two piece stick that presents a rigid structure when in use, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical. construction that is simple, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.

WVith the above and other objects in view the invention. resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an umbrella, showing the stick, a rib and a spreader, the remaining ribs and spreader-s being removed to show my invention more clearly, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a portion of the stick, Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the stick, Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the umbrella showing a rib thereof in a colla sod and folded position, Fig. 5 is a longituc inal sectional view of a portion of the rib, and Fig. 6 is a cross sectional View of the same.

An umbrella in accordance with this invention comprises a sectional stick having a tubular handle section 1 and a tubular tip section 2. The inner end of the handle section 1 has a handle 3 and a spring pressed pivoted keeper 1. The outer end of the handle section has diametrically opposed openings 5.

The inner end of the tip section 2 is provided with a transverse pin 6 and mounted upon said pin is a spring 7 having arms 8 protruding from the inner end of the tip section. The ends of the arms 8 terminate in latches 9 adapted to engage in the openings 5 and lock the tip section 2 relatively to the handle section 1, yet permitting of said sections being disassembled when the umbrella is to be folded.

The outer end of the tip section 2 has a notch 10 of the ordinary and well known type and pivotally connected to said notch is an inner tubular rib section 11 into which is adapted to slide an outer channel-shaped rib section 12. The outer channel-shaped rib sect-ion 12 has the inner end thereof extending in the outer end of the inner rib section 11, and mounted in the inner end of the outer section 12 is a strap 13 to which is pivotally connected the eye 14 of a spreader 15. The spreader 15 is of such dimension as to fit within the outer rib section 12. The spreader 15 has the inner end thereof connected to a runner 16 slidably mounted upon the umbrella stick. The runner has the inner end thereof provided with a head 17 adapted to be engaged by the keeper 1 for retaining the umbrella in a closed position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

As shown in Figs. 2 and 4 the outer rib section 12 and the spreader 15 slide into the inner rib section when the umbrella is to be folded audwith a cover (not shown) held by the notch 10, the outer end of the inner rib section 11 and the outer end of the outer rib section 12 said cover does notinterfere with the folding of the umbrella. The handle section 1 can be easily detached from the tip section 2 and placed in proximity with the folded parts of the umbrella supported by the tip section.

What I claim is z- A folding umbrella comprising a stick having a runner and a notch, an inner tubular rib section pivotally connected at one end to said notch, an outer channel-shaped rib section having its inner end extending into the outer end of said inner rib section, a strap secured within said outer rib section and projecting forwardly with respect to the inner end of said section, said strap In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
