To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CILmLns T. BLooMnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of lVayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Paper Vessel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper vessels or receptacles, and has for its object to provide a novel paper receptacle folded from a blank and having a novel closure arrangement therefor, and also a novel manner for securing the bail thereto.
To this end the invention resides in the novel arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View of the blank, from which the receptacle is folded. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed receptacle in open position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the receptacle when closed. Fig. 1 is a cross section of the receptacle when closed.
This vessel or receptacle is folded from a paper blank, which may be of any other material, and comprises the bottom 1 and the opposite pairs of sides 22 and 33 from which are folded corner sections comprising the portions 10 and 11, the said sections being folded over the opposite sides 2-2 to overlap each other The said corner sections extend above the sides 2 and 3, or above the cover lines. The sides 33 have the inner cover flaps 8 attached thereto and the sides 2 have the outer cover flaps 6 attached thereto, the said cover flaps being arranged to overlap each other in the customary manner to form a closure for the receptacle.
The outer cover flap of the flaps 6 is provided with a metallic tongue 22 which is clenched thereto and this tongue is arranged to traverse the upper end of one of the opposite corner sections when the flaps have been folded over the vessel to secure the flaps in position by being bent over the said corner section. The other corresponding corner section is cut away as designated at 18 to permit the tongue 22 to engage or pass through the apertures 19. It is preferable to have the inner corner section cut away as designated at 18 to permit the tongue 22 to pass readily through the apertures 19 instead of piercing both of the corner sections for the reason that the corner sections in folding together will cause the apertures in the two sections to frequently come out of registration with each other which would render the closure means useless. The wire bail 21 has the ends thereof hooked through the overlapping portions of the said corner sections above the said sides or above the cover line, thus forming a means for securing the said sections in position as well as forming a handle for the receptacle. In securing the bails to the said corner sections above the cover line or above the sides the bail is prevented from entering the receptacle, it being desirable to eliminate metallic obstructions in the vessel. A label 24 which may bear any suitable printed matter, is pasted over the clenched end of the tongue 22, when desired. It will thus be seen that by extending the corner sections above the opposite sides which have overlapping cover flaps attached thereto, a novel closure arrangement is provided and also a novel manner for securing the bail to the vessel. It will also be seen, particularly from Fig. 3, that the fastening device or tongue 22 is arranged adjacent one end of the bail 21 and is offset to one side thereof, so as to engage one of the corner flaps with which said bail is connected. It will also be seen that the upper cover flap 16 with which said tongue 22 is connected, extends parallel with the handle portion of the bail and is hinge-connected with the end of the receptacle opposite the fastening device 22. This particular arrangement of the cover flap, bail, and overlapping corner flaps results in a very strong construction of the receptacle.
