Letters Patent No. 105,256 dated July 12, 1870.
IMPROVED LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANER.
The Schedulerefen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
1, JAMES RYAX, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Lamp-chimney Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Object of the I nvent-ion.
My invention consists in covering .brushes, formed of bristles, or whalebone, or some similarly flexible substances, with covers of soft dressed skins, as the chamois, deer, &c., or with any woven substance, as cotton, flannel, &c., to serve as rubbers to clean and polish the inner surfaces of said chimneys.
The bristles or brush serve to keep the rubber of skins or textile fabrics closely pressed against the glass, and, at the same time, allow great flexibility to the rubber or cleaner, so that it may easily conform to the I am aware that it is quite common in the process of cleaning lamp-chimneys to use cloths or soft skins for wiping and thereby polishing them on the inner surface, and applying said skins or cloths by the brushes now in common use for cleaning such articles; but I am not aware that such skins or cloths have ever been so attached to said brushes that they can be operated in both directions with equal facility and perfection. I
Such a result I accomplish by forming the material for rubbing the glass into such a shape as to neatly cover the brush, and, when drawn over it, as shown in fig. 1, I fasten it to the handleof the brush in any convenient manner, so that the action of rubbing back and forth will not separate it from the brush.
I claim as my improvement in lamp-chimney cleaners The construction of the brush A with wire and bristles, handle D, and the brush-cover of chamoisleather, or other similar material, as shown and described.
' JAMES RYAN.
