To all 107mm t may concern Be it known that we, ANTON E. lVicK- LUND and JAMES B. Groer, citizens ofthe llnited States, residing at Middle River, in the county of Marshall and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Folding Seats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved folding and reversible seat especially adapted for use on the bed or box of a sleigh or wagon. the object of the invention being to provide an improved seat of this character, the back and ends of which may be readily folded on the bottom and the supporting brackets. and which may be readily arranged either as hanging supports or as outwardly project-ing supports to secure the seat either on and above the sides of a sleigh or wagon box or bed or to sustain the seat below the sides of the box or bed so as to protect the driver from the cold.

The invention co-nsists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices. hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing :#Figure 1 is a front elevation of a seat constructed in accordance with our invention, showing the same in elevated position in full. lines and in lowered position in dotted lines, and in connection with the side of the bed or box of a sleigh or wagon, the said sides being indicated in cross section. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of one end portion of the same.

In accordance with this invention, the seat comprises a bottom 1, end members 2 and a back 3. The back, which, like the bottom, is preferably made o-f wood, is connected to the bottom by means of hinges .r4 which enable the back to be folded forwardly on the bottom and which also cause the lower end of the back to bear on the bottom and support the back in upright rearwardly inclined position. The end members 2 are preferably made of iron or steel sheets or plates and are secured on the ends of the bottom by means of hinges 5. Each hinge has a lower member 6 which is secured on the upper surface of the bottom and a member 7 which is secured on the outer side of the end member. The saidhinge members are provided at their meeting endsA with alined ears S through which the pintle rods or pins 9 extend and the ears of the lower members are formed on their outer sides with shoulders 10 which form stops for the upper hinge members so that they serve to support the end members of the seat in upright outwardly inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1 in full lines, the hinges adapting the said end members to be folded inwardly on the bottom of the seat as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

Cross bars 11 are secured on the under side of the bottom 1 at a suitable distance from the ends thereof by means of bolts 12. These cross bars are preferably made of iron or steel and are formed near their ends with arms 13. These arms are also secured to the botto-m by means of bolts 14; and their ends are upturned as at 15 and provided with .outwardly extending extremities 1G to which supporting brackets 17 are pivotally connected so that the said supporting brackets may be extended upwardly from the seat or swung downwardly therefrom. These supporting brackets are provided at their outer ends on opposite sides with reversely arranged hooks 18-19- The hooks 18 when the supporting brackets are downturned, serve to fit aside the upper edges of the side boards a of the sleigh or wagon bed or box so as to support the seat above the sides of the said bed or box. Then the brackets are upturned, the` hooks 19 fit over the upper' edges of the said side boards of the bed or box so that the brackets serve to suspend the seat therefrom and support the seat at a point below the upper edges of the seat boards so that the seat when thus supported is within the bed or box of the sleigh or wagon and the driver is protected from the cold.

It will be understood that the seatmay be readily detached from the bed or box and may be readily folded compactly so as to be disposed in a very small space.

While we have herein shown and described a preferred form of our invent-ion, we would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of our invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
