eral character whereby the board is adapted to be adjusted into operative or inoperative position, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the board may be swung within a case or cabinet secured to a wall or other support so as to have the board entirely out of the way when not required in use.
Furthermore it is an object of the inventi on to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the board may be effectively maintained in operative or horizontal position and whereby it may be easily released from said position and swung into an inoperative or substantially vertical position when not required for use.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im proved ironing board whereby certain im-' portant advantages are "attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein-.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an ironing board arranged in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with the parts in folded position; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an elevational view showing the device adjusted into operative position; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary front elevational view with the board proper and the coactmg struts omitted; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in top plan of the rear end portion of the board proper; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary View in elevation of one .of the bars as herein employed; Fig. 8 is a fragmentary View. partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a further embodiment of my invention; Fig. 9 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a connection between the rear end portion of the board proper and the supporting frame coacting therewith; Fig. 10 is a View in rear elevation of the supporting frame for the rear end portion of the board proper; and Fig. 11 is a view in top plan of the rear end portion of the board proper.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a case or cabinet which may besecured, in suspended or elevated position, to the side of a wall or other support and which embodies the two vertically disposed sides 1, the top 2, the bottom 3 and the back 4;.
Interposed between and operatively engaged with the inner faces of the sides 1- and the back 4 at apredetermined point intermediate the top 2 and the bottom 3, are the brackets 5 arranged in horizontal alinement and 'havingthe intermediate portions 6 offset inwardly relative to the sides 1.
Pivotally engaged with the offset portions 6 are the angle bars 7 of predetermined length and connected by the brace bars 8 preferably arranged in X formation, whereby the bars 7 will be caused to move in unison and in the same general direction. The outer extremities of the bars 7 are ofiset, as
at 9, and projecting laterally and outwardly from said oflset portions 9 are the pins 10 disposed through the longitudinally disposed slots 11 formed in the upper ends of the bars 12 pivotally engaged, as at 1 1, with the supporting struts 15.
The lower ends of the struts 15 are hingedly connected as at 16 with the bottom 3 of the case or cabinet C, while the upper ends thereof are tied or connected with a transverse member 17. Suitably secured to thetransverse member 17 isthe double hinge 18 which is also secured to the under surface of the board B.
The board B is of suitable configuration in plan and has its inner end portion provided with the plates 19 extending beyond the longitudinal edges thereof, the extended portions of the plates 19 being provided with the forwardly directed arms or fingers 20 arranged on a suitable incline andpartially intersecting the sides of the board B.
Extending between each of the arms or fingers 20 and the adjacent longitudinal edge of the board B is a bar 21 having its lower end pivotally engaged, as at 22, with the bottom 3 of the case or cabinet C and having its opposite end portion provided with the elongated longitudinally disposed slot 23 through which passes the pin 24 extending inwardly of a. bar 7 at a point inwardly of but in close proximity to the offset portion 9 thereof. 7 7
Each of the bars'2l adjacent its upper end has its rear edge provided with a notch or recess 25 with which the extended portion of a plate l9.coacts to maintain'th rear end of the board B in operative or horizontal position, it being self-evident that thestruts 15 hereinbefore referred to serve to maintain the forward or outer end of the board B in operative position.
When it is desired to position the board 13 within the case or cabinet C, it is only necessary to elevate the rear end of'the board to disengag the plates 19 from the notches 2 5 7 produced in the bars 21 and then cause the rear end portion of the board to slide downwardly upon the bars 21 until the board. B is disposed substantially parallel with the struts 15, whereupon the board B together with the struts 15 may be readily swung upwardly into the cabinet or case C.
A conventional retaining means as indicated at 26 may be employed for maintaining the struts 15 together with the board B within the case or cabinet C. As any retaining means maybe employed which will operate with convenience, a detail description and illustration thereof is thought to be unnecessary.
In the form of invention illustrated in Figs. 8 to llinclusive the struts 15 are operatively connected with the sides 1 of the case or cabinet C through the medium of the pivotally connected brace rods 27 serving to limit the downward movement of the struts 15 I-Iingedly connected with the bottom 3 of the case or cabinet C is a frame 28 herein disclosed as substantially X-shape in form board is effectively supported in operative position. In order to hold the board B against lateral movement, I find it of advantage to provide the free ends of the hook plates 30 with the recesses 32 adapted to receive the plates 31 hereinbefore referred to and 'coacting therewith in a manner which is .believed to beclearly obvious to prevent lateral movement of the board B.
33 denotes a strip of flexible material preferably webbing having its inner end secured to the back et of the case ofcabinet C throughthe medium of the strip 34: extending transversely andentirely across the cabinet or case C, while the opposite end of the strip 33 is secured to the cross member 29. It will be selfevident that the strip 33 serves to limit the outward or downward movement of the member29 yetpermits a ready movement of said member within the case or cabinetG.
The remaining features of the invention as disclosed in these figures is'substantially the same as has been described relative to Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive. I
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an ironing board constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modificationwithoutmaterial departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice- I claim:
