To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, Jol-1N F. VARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashburn, in the county of Loudoun and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bouquet-Holders for Burial-Gaskets, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
rlhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a device for temporarily attaching bouquets or flowers to the tops of burial caskets.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel features of construction of the device all, as ma;7 be more fully hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically dened in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the lettesr of reference marked thereon, form a part of the specification and, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the burial casket showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of one end of the device, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the hooks or clamping devices attached.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents one of the hooks co-mprising a hook-supporting member B. which is cylindrical in shape and cylindrically recessed and is swiveled or otherwise attached to a hook C, the outer end of which latter is inclined inwardly and adapted, when in use, to engage the overlapping edge of the casket lid. Said body portions B are provided with extensions at the ends thereof serving as handles, forming a ready means for removal of said hooks. An elongated eye D is provided upon the lower face of the portion A, the said eye being provided with a pin E, over which is passed an elastic tape F, said tape being passed through the loop, as shown in the drawings. The elastic band or tape F is provided at both ends with hooks A and is made adjustable in length so as to adapt its use to caskets of different widths by means of an adjusting buckle Gr.
lhile I have described and shown an elast-ic tape or band provided at its ends with hooks for engaging the edges of the casket, it will be understood that if desired, a spiral spring or other elastic material may be substituted for the tape.
The hooks upon the opposite ends of the device are engaged with the upper outer side edges of the casket, the length of the elastic band or tape F having been irst adjusted to conform to the width of the casket top, so that when the device is in place the tape will extend transversely across the top of the casket. and drawn in close contact with the upper face thereof. The stems of the flowers or bouquet are passed beneath the band, which serves to retain them against accidental displacement. Vhen it is desired to remove the iiowers from the casket, it is simply necessary to detach the hooks from their engagement with the side edges as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :d
l. A device for attaching flowers to burial caskets comprising hooks, a strap secured thereto and disposed therebetween, means for regulating the length of the latter, members upon which the hooks are swiveled, said members each having handle projections extending beyond the opposite edges of the respective Shanks of the hooks, serving as convenient means for disengaging the hooks upon the opposite edges of a casket top, as set forth.
