Specification of Letters Patent.
ORCHARD-HEATER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that JAMES L. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orchard-Heaters, of which the following is a specification. y invention relates to improvements in orchard heaters, adapted to burn eflicient-ly and with but little or no smoke, the heavy fuel oils derived from petroleum.
This invention is an improvement onthe orchard heater shown in my prior application, Serial No. 674,531, filed January 31, 1912, and the object of my present improvement is to provide a heater of simple construction which is especially adapted for the eflicient combustion of all heavy fuel oils whether derived from the asphaltum base oils or the paraflin oils.
My improved heater is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings in which Figure 1 is aside view, partly in section, showing the heater when arranged to burn the asphaltumbase oils, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of. the heater when arranged to burn the paraflin base oils.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in each of the views.
The fuel reservoir or receptacle 4 is made tapering as shown, thetop being the larger, and is provided with groups of draft openings 5 near its upper rim. Each group of these draft openings is provided with a pivoted damper 6. for controlling the admission of air into the reservoir which regulates the rate of combustion of the fuel.
An annular hood 7 is provided which referably has its inner and outer circumference-flanged substantially as shown. The outer flange 8 is turned downward and fits closely over the, upper edge of the fuel reservoir 4. The inner flange 9 is turned upward. The draft chimney 10 is made tapering and has a series of small openings 11 near the small end which is of such size that it will fitwithin the irmer flange 9 with its to or near the upper edge of the fuelreservoir with the openings 11 below the hood 7, as shown in Fig. 1.
The larger end of the draft chimney 10 is made to fit close'ly outside of the flange 9 as shown in Fig. 2, the openings 11 being 110W near the top of the chimney will admit air to the flame within the chimney in such a manner as to insure the more complete combustion of the free carbon, thereby making the heater nearly smokeless in operation, which is very desirable in many localities.
A cover 12 is provided which fits closely on the top of the end of the chimney in order to prevent rain or snow or other foreign substances from getting into the fuel reservoir when the heater is not in use.
The separate parts comprising the complete heater are all made tapering in order that they may be closely nested or packed together for shipment or storage.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An orchard heater comprising a tapering liquid fuel reservoir, an annular hood removably fitted to the top of the fuel reservoir, a plurality of draft openings arranged in groups near the top of the fuel reservoir, a pivoted damper at each group of said openings, and a tapering draft chimney having each end adapted to be removably fitted to the annular hood about the central opening.
2. An orchard heater comprising a taper- .ing liquid fuel reservoir, an annular hood provided with flanges atits outer and inner circumference, the outer flange fitting over the upper edge of the fuel reservoir, a tapering draft chimney having its larger end fitted outside the inner flange of the annular hood and its smaller end adapted to be fitted within said inner flange, and a row of perforations around said chimney near its smaller end.
