ROLL-EDGE-MATTRESS MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
Application filed April 13, 1912. Serial No. 690,573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll-Edge-Mattress Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for forming roll-edges on mattresses, my object being to provide a device to facilitate this work.
I-Ieretofore, so far as I am aware, machines or devices of this character have consisted of two needle-carrying members adapted to act upon the mattress to form the roll-edge. By the use of such a machine; two rows of needle-holes are formed in the mattress in the making of each roll-edge.
My object is to provide a device having comparatively few needles in order to lessen the number of holes formed in the mattress by the use of the machine. Hence, in my improved construction, I employ two members arranged in parallel relation, but only one of these members is provided with needles, the other member acting as a sort of stop or clamping member which cooperates with the needle-member in forming the rolledge, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved machine shown in position for use in connection with a mattress, the latter being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 's a sectional view of the machine also shown in position for use upon a mattress which is also sectionized. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the machine operated to form the roll-edge.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a member of the machine the same consisting of a rectangular frame 6 composed of parallel parts 7 connected by transverse ribs or webs 8. This member 5 is pivotally connected at its opposite extremities as shown at 9, with one extremity of each of two curved yokes 10. The opposite extremities of these yokes are connected by a bar 12. The member 5 is provided with needles 13 which are passed through the parallel parts 7 and extend beyond one of these parts as shown at 14:, the projecting extremities of the needles being curved. The part 7, remote from the projecting needle parts 14L, is equipped with handles 16 to facilitate the operation of the said member.
From the foregoing description, the use and operation of my improved device will be readily understood. The mattress upon which the roll edges are to be formed is prepared in the usual way. That is to say, the material constituting the cover is stufied with hair or other substance to be employed, leaving the sides and ends of the mattress approximately rectangular in shape. In order to form the roll-edges thereon, the device or machine is applied. to the upper corner of one side or end of the mattress in such a manner that the member 5 carrying the needles shall rest upon the top surface of the mattress, while the bar 12 shall engage the side or end thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the machine being preferably applied close to one side or end, as the case may he. The user then grasps the handle 1G and turns the member 5 on its pivots 9, causing the grooved projections 14 of the needles to pierce the cover 15 of the mat-tress at the top and enter the filling. Then as the turning operation of the member 5 is con.- tinued, the needle points 14 approach the bar 12 and a roll-member 19 is formed as illustrated in Fig. 3, the bar 12 cooperating with the member 5 in the formation of the roll-member, the filling of the members being compressed between the bar 12 and a part 7 of the member 5 whereby a comparatively narrow neck 17 is formed where the filling of the roll-member 19 communicates with the body of the filling of the mattress. The roll-member 19 is maintained in the position illustratedin Fig.3 by sewing through the neck 17 approximately on the dotted line 18. When this is done, the machine is moved along and the operation repeated until the roll-member is formed the entire length or width of the mattress, as the case may be.
It is preferred to make these machines two feet in length so that by three applications of the machine a roll-member 19 may be formed lengthwise of the mattress, and by two applications a similar roll-member may be formed widthwise of the mattress.
After a roll-member has been formed entirely around the mattress by applying the machine as heretofore described and as illustrated in the drawings, the mattress is turned over so that the side which was formerly lowermost is uppermost, after which the operation is repeated until rollmembers 16 are formed entirely around the mattress at both top and bottom. From this it will be understood that the portion of the mattress engaged by the bar 12 is devoid of needle-holes which, as heretofore explained, is objectionable, and which, by the use of my improved device, are reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described my what I claim is:
1. A roll-edge-mattress machine comprisinvention,
ing one member carrying needles projecting beyond the body of the member, the projecting parts of the needles being curved, while the other member is devoid of needles and consists of a single bar, and yokes connecting the two members, the member carrying the needles being pivotally mounted upon said yokes for the purpose set forth.
2. A roll-edge-forming mattress machine, comprising two members, curved yokes connecting the two members in parallel relation, one member being pivotally mounted upon said yokes and carrying needle-points projecting from one edge, while its other edge is equipped with handles, the opposite member being devoid of needles, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
