Description

MORRIS L. BENNETT, OF WAVERLY, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 105,029, dated Jul- 1j 5, 1870.
TUNING-SCALE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all wlwntit may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS L. BENNETT, of Waverly, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tuning-Scales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures ot reference marked thereon. Y
Figure 1 of the drawing is a perspective View of the instrument, with a part of the ease removed to show the position `of the reed-pipes.
Figure 2 is a perspective View, showing thc arrangement of the tones of the scale.
Thecasc of the scale H is made of metal, hard rubber, or other suitablematerial, cylindrical in shape. \Vithin the case the reed'pipes are arranged in the form of a circle, with an opening, G, in the bottom of each pipe, for the escape ofthe air, extending through the case. The reed-pipe is contracted in the middle,
in such manner as to hold the reed in place without fastening, soit can be drawn ont when necessary.
Over the reed-pipes is placed the plate 1l, withan opening through it for each reed, the opening only admitting the air in the pipe, inside of the reed, and on this plate are marked the tones of the reeds.
Above this plate is the circular plate A, which is just large enough to cover the openings through the plate B. In this plate is fixed the month-piece a'. This plate B turns upon its center, O, so as to allow the mouth-piece to be brought in connection with any desired reed. The reeds are tuned to represent a single octave ot' the musical scale.
Claim..
That I claim, and desire t0 seeure by Letters Patent as my invention, is-
The arrangement and combination of the reed-pipes F, of the shape described, in a cylindrical case, (the rods being tuned to represent an octave of the musical scale,) together with the plates B and A, with the mouth-piece a', so as to allow the mouth-piece to be brought in connection with any desired reed or tone, substantially as herein described.
In testimony that I' claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence. of two witnesses.
.MORRIS L. BENNETT.
