PATENT OFFICE.
7 JAMES H. TANN, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 740,485, dated October 6, 1903.
Application filed Juno 2, 1902. Serial No. 109,907. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H; TANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to musical instruments, and comprises a stringed instrument having a trumpet-shaped tube communicating with the body of the instrument, by which a purer, sweeter, and more powerful tone is obtained than that possessed by instruments of this character constructed in the usual manner.
Novel details in the construction and arrangement of the several parts will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter and the appended claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; and Fig. 2, a like view, partly in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the body of the instrument is indicated at 4, having a sounding-post 5 and a soundhole 6, as usual. The body may be of any desired shape. The material used in its construction is preferably cold-rolled steel. The top, bottom, and sides are secured together by bolts 7. The neck is-indicated at 8, and the head at 9. The strings 10 are supported by a tailpiece 11, secured to the rear end of the body. A light steel strap 12 supports the neck 8. To the rear end of the body l and communicating with the interior 4 thereof a nipple 13 is secured. A trumpet-shaped tube 15 fits over the nipple and extends upward in a curve, the bell or mouth 16 opening toward the top of the body. The instrument may be used with or without the trumpet. By removing the trumpet from the nipple the tone of the instrument is considerably changed. To sustain the tube 15 in position,
I employ a coiled spring 17, one end of which is secured thereto, the other end being socured to the tailpiece.
The instrument has six strings and is tuned and fingered as a guitar. It is obvious, however, that it may be strung differently, and my invention may be used in connection with other stringed instruments, such as the mandolin, bandurria, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stringed musical instrument, of a trumpet shaped tube JAMES H. TANN."
