To al? whom, it may concern:
Be it known that i, PETER d. Jonnveoih a citizen of the United States, residinw at l Shelley, in the county of Bingham andSbtate of Keyhole-Guard,
Idaho, have invented a new and useful of which the following is a speciiication.
ll' y invention relates to improvements in keyhole guards for locks, and has for its object to provide a guard device of convenient size.
which can be quickly positioned in a lock and will instantly adjust itselI to the lock to firmly hold itself in position and thus eiiectually revent picking or otherwise tampering with the lock to open the door.
In the accompanyingl 1 is an elevation of drawings Figure e edge .of the lock portion of a door, partly in section, with my improved keyhole guard applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 F 1,'looking toward the door.
Fig. d is a perspective view of the 1s provided with a short cylindrical end portion or pin 6 having centrally of its length a rightangularlydisposed, oblong lug 7.
At th e inner end of the pin 6 is a cylindrical collar or stop tance the pin carrying the lug can be thrust 8, which limits the disinto a lock casing. From the collar 8 to a point the other side of the center of the shank, the letter is formed with a suhstantieily` square, intermediate portion 9, and from said portion the shank is cylindrical and screw threaded as at 10. The outer end 0i the shank has a loop 17 suitably secured thereto, whichloopzis shaped to resemble `a key loo -Slidagly mounted onthe 9'V is a keeper or Vfollower 11; The 'the keep squared portion body oi er is preferably dat and slightly oblong in shape with rounded corners, and
isprovided at a point on its longitudinal median line with a square aperture i2 through which the sqliareV portion of the shank 9 passes. d ust below the square aperture l2. is a projection or lug i3. At the sides of the keeper are integral, oppositelyparallel to each I disposed. rightfangular lugs i4, which are with means :for engaging "non-rotatably mounted other and extend `troni the l or convolution of which presses against the' keeper ll and is Yheld from lateral displacement hy means or' the lugs le. The spring is held in place hy a nut 3,6 mounted n the threaded part 10 of the stem 5, the nut hearing on the top coil of the Vspring in order that the tension of the spring may he adjusted when necessary.
The operation of the device is simple. lt is only necessary to r'est the loopl? against the inside of the hand, and grasp the lugs 14 between the iorenger andthe thumb and then draw the keeper or follower 1l back aglaiinst the tension or the spring 15. Then w le holding kthe keeper in the retracted posit-lon, insert the pin 6 with its lug 7 Yin the keyhole until the collar 8 shuts the outside or" the casing when the shank 5 is given a quarter turn to the right, which carries the lug I to a the ver-tic or longitudinal axis of the keyhole and hrings the lug 13 on the keeper in line therewith, when upon releasing the hold on the lugs lng 13 into the keyhole and will draw the lug 7 on the pin tightly against the inside of the casing, as shown in Figs. i and 2.
What i claim is:`
l. ln a guard for iocks, a shank provided a lock casing, a keeper siidahly mounted on said shank and adapted to engage akeyhole of the lock casing, s spiral spring-mounted on said shank and having its hase coil said keeper to force the same toward the lock casing engaging ineens carried hy the shank, a nut sdjustahly mounted on said shank and arranged to hear against the outer Vend or the ring to regulate the amount of the tensionthereof,V 'and rearvvardly extending lugs carried Vhy said keeper 'andserfving as hand holds to acilitnte the Nretmction ont said koel er.
2. I n a guard for V:formed at one end carried hy said pin,
oaks, a shank, n pin o1? said shank, a ug o keeper slidehly hut on said shank, a' lug carried Toy said keeper, said lug being arranged at an angle to the lng carried hy said pin, a spring mounted on the shank for moving said keeper toward the ing carried an opposite direction :from the position at right angles to 14, the spring will :torce the bearing against :los y
