To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB SIMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Bags; and I do :hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to hand-bags and the like and more particularly to the method and means for securing a handle to said hand-bag or the like.

An object of my invent-ion is to provide a hand-bag which when suspended by the handle holds said hand-bag against accidental or malicious opening.

Another object of my invention is to provide a hand-bag which is held securely closed while suspended by the handle yet access to the interior of said hand-bag is easily obtained by swinging the handle to one side or the other.

A further object of my invention is to provide a fixture to the frame of a hand-bag or the like which fixture may serve the dual purpose of a locking member for the frame and a supporting member to receive a handle.

Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings, in which,

1n the manufacture of ladies hand-bags, mesh bags and the like, it is desired that some means be provided whereby said handbag or the like is protected against malicious opening while being carried by the handle. It is also necessary to have such a hand-bag or the like capable of being easily opened when so desired without the necessity of the operation of numerous intricate parts.

In the execution of my invention, I pro vide a hand-bag 10 which may be made in the usual way as of leather, mesh, fabric or the like and to this bag is secured the frame comprising the members 11 and 12. The

members of the frame may be provided with the usual locking means 13 if so desired but it may be further stated that the device serves its purpose equally as well in the absence of such locking means. The hand-bag is provided with the usual handle 15 which may be made of leather, chain or cord by which said hand-bag is suspended or carried and when said hand-bag is suspended by said handle the members 11 and 12 are securely held against one another but when said handle is swung so that the ends thereof lie substantially parallel to the members 11 and 12, it is possible to move the members 11 and 12 from oneanother so as to open the bag. The fittingby which said handle is secured to the frame comprises a standard 16 which is secured to one of the members of the frame which as shown in the drawings as to the member 12 having an angle portion 17 formed thereon to which angle portion a bail shaped member 18 is secured. One of the legs of said bail shaped member continues beyond the fulcrum point so as to form an ear 19. The portion 17 as well as portions of the bail shaped members 18 are drilled to receive a pin 20 which allows a swinging movement of the member 18 with respect to the standards 16 with its portion 17. The member 11 has lugs 21 secured thereto which lugs when the frame is closed come beneath the overhanging portion 17 and when the bail shaped member 18 is swung substantially to a vertical position with respect tothe frame, the ear engages the lug 21 and prevents the members 11 and 12 from being moved apart. The members '16 and '21 may be secured to the members 11 and 12 in any desired way but as shown in Fig. 3, said members are provided with lugs which pass through openings in the members 11 and 12 and are riveted in said members 11 and 12.

It is evident from the drawing that when the bag is suspended by the handle, the ear '19 engages the lug 21 and holds the members. 11 and 12 together and that while in this position it is impossible for the bag to be opened without the knowledge of the person carrying the bag. When it is desired to gain access to the bag the handle 15 is swung to one side so as to cause the ear 19 to swing free of the lug 21 at which time the bag is capable of opening.

I am aware that there is a possibility of the bag becoming caught when the person carrying the same passes through a crowded place which may cause the bag to assume a different position with respect to the handle than when the bag is suspended freely;

also when the person carrying the bag sits down orrests the bag on anything the hamdle may accidentally swing to one side or the other with respect to the frame so that the bag may be accidentally opened; so

the locking members 13 are omitted the tic'al form shown in the drawings herewith.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a bearing member secured to one portion of a frame, a bail shaped member pivotally mounted thereon, an extension from one leg of said bail shapedmember, a boss formed on the inner face of said extension, said extension being adapted' to engage a portion of the opposite frame member in certain po sitions, said opposite frame being grooved to receive the boss formed upon the extension.

2. In a device of the character described, in combination with a hand-bag and handle, a frame carried by said hand-bag said frame comprising hinged members, bearing members secured to one of said hinged members, bail shaped members secured to said bearing members, said handle being secured to said bail shaped members, extensions from said bail shaped members, bosses formed on the, inner face of said extensions, said extensions being adapted to engage portions of the opposite frame, said opposite member being grooved to receive the bosses formed on the extensions to prevent absolute freedom of movement of said bail shaped members.

' 3. In a device of the character described, in combination with hinged frame members,

a standard secured to one of said frame members, offset member therefrom, a bail shaped member pivotally secured to said offset portion, lugs carried by the other hinged frame member, said lugs being adapted to rest under said offset portion of said standard carried by the first-mentioned hinged member, an extension from one of the legs of said bail shaped member adapted to engage said lug in some positions of said bail shaped member, a boss formed on the inner face of'said extension'and the lugsin combination with a hand-bag, hinged frame members secured thereto, one of said members having standards rising therefrom members, one leg of each of said bail shaped members pivot-ally secured to said standards,

a flexible handlesecured to said bail shaped members, one leg of each of said ball shaped members extending beyond the fulcrum point and in substantially a straight line with the bail shaped portion, a boss formed on the inner face of sald leg, grooved lugs 1 carried by the other hinged frame member, and said extensionsengaging a portion of the other hinged frame member when the bag is held in suspension from said handle.
