GEORGE N. MASON, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO READING HARDWARE COMPANY, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
STORE-DOOR LATCH.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen N. MASON,
Icitizen ot the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Door Latches, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in store door latches, and the object in the present invention is to provide a latch in which a thumb lever is used as the means for withdrawing' the latch bolt, with a simple means for locking it against opening from the outside by means other than a key. In latches of this character it has been customary to provide thumb stops on the :tace of the lock case, by means of which the latch could be set for operation or locked against such operation. In my present invention I do not employ such means, but while my latch is operable by thumb lever from either' side of the door, it may be locked by key from the inside so that it may be opened from the outside by key only, although the operation by thumb lever from the inside is not interfered with.
The invention consists in providing a slidable member, operable by the inside key cylinder, that will be placed in the path ol. the vertical latch operating member that is in connection with the outside thumb lever, so that this slide is either free to move or not, depending on the location of the slidable member operated by the key cylinder.
A further object is to provide means for 'operating the latch bolt from the outside through the key cylinder, which I accomplish by placing on the slidable member a pivoted member that will be brought into the path of the cam on the outside c linder when the slidable member has een moved to the position where the outside thumb lever action is stopped so that at the same time that the thumb lever operation is prevented, the key operation is substituted.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which Figure l is a plan view of the lock with the cover plate ot' the casing removed, showing the latch bolt projected and the parts in position for operation either by key or Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
Serial No. 680,655.
thumb lever from outside or inside. Fig. 2 is a like view, with the bolt retracted, the inside key cylinder having made an entire revolution, and the outside thumb slide locked against movement. Fig. 3 is a like view, showing that the bolt has been retracted by the inside thumb lever. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 1 1 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 designates the casing, 2 a spring backed latch bolt, 3 the outside key cylinder and 1 the inside key cylinder.
5 designates a slide, capable oit operation by the cam G on the inside cylinder. This slide travels in guides in the casing as usual and is provided with the usual tumbler 7 for engagement with the cam G. This slide 5 is also provided with a pivoted leverl 8 which is carried along with the slide, and this lever has a dog 9 formed on its free end. This dog, when the slide has been moved to the right, is placed in the path of the cam Q0 on the outside cylinder. The slide 5 is also provided with a depending leg 10 formed with a foot 11, which foot is adapted to be moved into the path of the vertical slide operated by an outside thumb lever, to be described.
The latch bolt is provided with a flange 12 on its inner end and this flange is engaged by a lug 13 on the lower end of a pivotally mounted three-arm lever 14. This lever is formed with an arm 14 in engagement with the latch bolt, as just described; with a second arm 15 in engagement with the dog 9 and a third arm 16 to which is pivoted a link, the opposite end of which is pivoted to the free end of a bar 17 whose opposite end is pivoted in the casing and which bar crosses the path of a pair of vertical slides 18 and 19. These slides are capable of being moved vertically by a thumb lever of any construction (not shown) such as are used on latches of this class, the slide 18 being operable by the outsi'de lever and the slide 19 by the inside lever. When either lever is operated, the slide in moving up will raise the bar 17 and turn the three-arm lever 111 on its pivotal point, and retract the latch bolt. The latch bolt is also operable by the key cylinder on the outside, for the reason that the cam thereon will contact with the dog 9 and through it depress the arm 15 of the pivoted lever, thus retracting the latch bolt by the turning of this lever. This action of the lever, by the outside key, is only possible however When the slide 5 has been moved by the inside key to the position Where the do-g is brought into the path of the cam on the outside cylinder.
When the slide 5 is moved as just described, it Will carry the leg 10 with it and the foot 1l thereon Will move to the position immediately over the vertical slide 18, Which is connected to the outside lever, thus effectually locking the slide and incidentally the latch against movement by the outside thumb lever; this action of locking it against movement by the thumb lever 'from the outside, does, as above stated, place the parts in position for being operated from the outside through the act-ion of the key cylinder.
lt is evident that the latch is operated as usual, through a thumb lever, from either side, but, when it is desired to lock the latch against action from the outside by others than those provided with keys, the inside key cylinder'is operated, thus placing the parts in position where they can be operated from the outside, by a key only, the thumb lever action being stopped.
By this construction, accidental interference With the latch is impossible, for the reason that it is necessary to deliberately set it for the action desired, and this can be done only through the inside key cylinder.
Having thus fully described my invention, What l claim is 1. In a store door latch the combination of a casing; a spring backed latch bolt; a three-armed lever operably connected to the latch bolt; means for turning the lever to retract the latch bolt comprising a pair of vertically movable slides; a slidable locking member; a leg on said member adapted to lock one of said slides; a dog on said slidable member adapted to move the three-armed lever; an inside key cylinder for operating the slidable locking member and an outside key cylinder for operating the three-armed lever through the dog.
2. In a latch for doors, a casing; a latch bolt; a three-arm lever in operative connection with the bolt; means for moving said lever from either side of the door, comprising a pair of vertically movable slides, a pivoted bar and a link connecting the bar and the lever; a locking slide adapted to lock the outside operating vertical slide against movement; means on the slide for operating the three-arm lever When t-he said slide is in locked position; an inside key cylinder for operating the locking slide and an outside key cylinder for actuating said dog.
3. ln a door latch a casing; a latch bolt; a lever for retracting the bolt; means including vertical slides for operating the lever from either side; key operated locking means for one of said slides; and outside key operated means for operating the lever When said slide is locked against movement.
li. In a latch, a casing; a bolt; means for retracting the bolt from both sides; means Within the casing for locking the outside retracting means; and a supplemental, keyoperated bolt retracting means, operable only when the outside retracting means is in locked position.
5. In a latch a casing; a latch bolt; an operating lever therefor; inside and outside operated slides for turning said lever; inside key operated locking means for the outside operated slide and outside key operated means for turning said lever When the outside operated slide is locked.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE N. MASON.
