COMBINATION MATCH-SAFE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ARTHUR G. Fem) and THEODORE ELLIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clark and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides a receptacle which may be conveniently carried in the vest pocket and adapted to contain matches and to be used for clipping the ends of cigars and for retaining the clippings as well as the cigar ashes.

The invention resides in the peculiar construct-ion of the component parts whereby the device as a whole is rendered compact, convenient of operation and reliable as a cutter for clipping the ends of cigars, the cutter also serving to normally close the opening in the side of the receptacle through which the end of the cigar is inserted to be clipped off.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a receptacle embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line .e2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a front view of the device. F 1g. 4 is a rear view. Fig. 5 is a section on the line ww of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line yy of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a side view, partly in section, having the cover open. Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the cutting blade.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.

The body of the receptacle is indicated at 1 and is closed at one end by means of a hinged cover 2, which is normally held closed by means of a spring catch 3. When the catch 3 is pressed inward to release the cover 2, the latter is thrown open by means of a spring 4, which is secured at one end to the back of the receptacle and has its opposite end portion pressing upon a lug 5 extending inwardly from the back of the cover Specification of Letters Patent.

near the hinge connection thereof with the body 1. The bottom 6 has a rim which fits close against the inner walls of the lower portion of the body 1 to which it is secured in any manner. A partition 7 divides the receptacle into two compartments 8 and 9, the compartment 8 being adapted to receive the matches, whereas the compartment 9 is designed to receive the cigar clippings and ashes.

A cap 10 is slidably fitted to the lower portion of the body 1 and is limited in its movements by means of slots 11 and rivets or like fastenings 12. The rivets or fastenings 12 may also serve to retain the bottom 6 in place by passing through openings formed in the pendent rim or flange thereof. Depressions 13 are formed in the lower end of the cap 10 and constitute pockets in which the lower ends of expansible springs 14 are fitted, said springs being interposed between the bottom (3 and lower end of the cap 10 and serving to normally hold the cap 10 pressed outwardly. The cap 10 incloses the springs 14 and also forms a means for operating the cigar cutter, which latter consists of a blade 15 secured at its lower end to the cap 10 and having a slot 16 in its upper portion through which passes a rivet 17 secured to a side of the receptacle. The blade 15 is preferably of steel and has an opening 18 which is beveled to form a cutting edge, said opening being adapted to register with an opening 19 formed in a side of the receptacle adjacent the blade 15. The opening 18 is in the lower portion of the blade 15 and is normally out of register with the opening 19 so that the upper portion of the blade 15 covers and protects the opening 19. When the cap 10 is pressed inwardly the springs 14 are compressed and the opening 18 of the blade 15 is brought in register with the opening 19, thereby admittin of the introduction of the end of a cigar into the openings 18 and 19, after which the cap 10 is released and is pressed closed, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2, thereby preventing the ashes or clippings contained in the compartment 9 from entering the compartment 8.

It is to be understood that the device may be constructed of any material and finished in any manner, but it is preferred to form the parts of sheet metal which may be finished according to the desired cost of the article. IV hen cigar ashes are to be placed in the compartment 9 the cover 2 is released by pressure upon the catch 3 when it is thrown open by means of the spring 4:, thereby exposing the compartment and admitting of the ashes from the cigar being deposited therein. The matches are placed in the compartment 8 and are accessible by means of the cover 2.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while we have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:

In a device of the character specified, the combination of a hollow body, a closure fitted within an end portion of the body and having a rim, fastenings passing through the rim of the closure and the walls of the hollow body, a cap slidably mounted upon the end of the hollow body provided with said closure, said cap having slots through which the before mentioned fastenings pass to hold the cap in position upon the hollow body and limit the outward movement thereof, a spring arranged within the cap and normally exerting an outward pressure thereon, the said hollow body having an opening in a wall, and a blade connected with the cap and normally closing the opening in the side of the hollow body and further provided with an opening adapted to register with the opening of the hollow body when the cap is pressed inwardly, the edge portion of the blade bordering upon the opening therein being beveled to a cutting edge.
