Be it known that I, CONIL-u) EuvALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 272 Commonwealth avenue, in the city of Elgin, in the county otl Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Fail IIolders, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to animal industry and has special reference to a milk pail t'or use in dairies.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a pail which can readily be supported upon the knees oit' the user, the support being of improved constructimi and arranged so that there is no danger ot' the same collapsing and permitting the upsetting of the pail.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists, in general, ol certain novel details in construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying official drawings and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a detail perspective showing the manner of using the pail. Fig. 2 is a side elevation oit a pail constructed in ac cordance with this invention, certain parts being shown in section better to bring out the details. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of one oit the supporting arms showing the manner in which the bail ot' the pail is used to lock the same in its raised position. Fig. 4 is a side view to reduce the scale taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view showing in full and dotted lines, ditferent positions of the pail. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of certain ears used herewith. F ig. 7 is a detail perspective of one of the supporting arms. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective of a certain pocket used to prevent rattling of the supporting arms and their swinging from side to side when the pail is being carried by the handle on the bail.

The body ot the pail is, preferably, in a general inverted frusto-conical form7 as illustrated at l0, and is provided with a pouring lip or spout 11. Attached to the body at oppositely disposed points of its upper edge, are certain lugs which each comprise Specification of Letters Patent.

Extending transversely across each o1 the openings 13 is a bolt 19; thereon is mounted a respective supporting arm. Each of these arms consists of a, preferably, straight l'iody-portion 20 having what may be termed a toot 21 extending' substantially i at right-angles thereto. the foot being irregularly curved to provide a toe 22 and a heel 23. In the body ot' the toot there is provided a slot which extends substantially transverse the :t'oot and is indicated at 24;. '.lhrough the slots 2-1 pass bolts 19.

The pail is provided with an ordinary wire bail 25 Vsubstantially semi-cireular in shape and having' a gripping handle 26 located thereon, the ends ot the wire forming the bail pass through the openings 14 and are arcuately curved as at 27 terminating in eyes 28. These arcuate ends 27 lie in planes substantially at right-angles to the plane ot the body ot the bail 2:7 so that they are rocked backward and forward as the handle 26 raised or depressed.

Adjacent the bottom ot the bail directly below the lugs 12, there is provided a pocket consisting oit a base-plate 29 whereon is termed a cup 30 adapted for the reception ot the lower end of one ot the members 20.

In the operation ot the device. the parts are, at the beginning of the milking, in the position in l `g. 2. This keeps the handle 26 conveniently .raised as the arcuate member 27 engages the upper end or foot of the member 20. and is thereby prevented from rotating. The milk man grasps the handle 26 and carries it to the barn or other place where. the milking is to be done; he then sets the pail upon the ground and raises each of the members 2() slightly until the lower end thereof swings clear ot the respective pocket 30, then by depressing the handle 26 the toes 22 will be caused to move downward and the supports to move upward. IIe then seats himself upon the milking stool and, grasping the men'lbers 20, lit'ts the pail and places its handles or members on his knees so that the pail swings freely therebetween. It is obvious, of course, he can adjust the pail, as to angle, by pressure on the sides, as can be seen by reference to Fig. l. After the milking operation has been completed, he simply lifts the pail oif his knees and the members 20, owing to their leverage and weight, cause the bail 25 and handle 26 to rise and reassume the position shown in Fig` 2. It is to be noted that the strain due to the heels and toes of the members 20 is brought upon the lugs l2 and not upon the milking bucketor pail itself.

There has thus been provided a simple and etlicient device of the kind described for the purpose speciiied.

lt is obvious that many mild changes may be made in the form of construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not, theretore, desired to conne the invention to the eXact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as lproperly come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. In a milking pail, the combination with a body, of supporting-arms pivotally mounted adjacent the upper edge of said body, a bail pivotally attached to said supporting arms, and means on said bail and supporting-arms to cause the arms and bail to move in unison and in opposite directions.

2. rlhe combination with a milk-pail, of supporting-arms hinged at the upper edge et' said pail, means to hold said arms in elevated position, and other means to hold said arms in dropped position.

3. The combination with a milk-pail, of supporting-arms provided with angular portions having slots therein, rivets carried by the pail and passing through said slots, a bail having ends placed to bear against the angle-portions of the supporting-arms, and means to hold said arms in a lowered posi tion.

4. The combination with a milk pail, 0ppositely-disposed lugs fixed at the upper edge of said milk pail, said lugs each including a body having an opening at its lower portion adapted for the reception of a portion of a supporting-arm, said lugs each further having a bail end-receiving opening at its upper portion, a bail having ends disposed in the receiving-openings, and ex tremities arcuate in form and lying in planes at right-angles to the plane of the bail adjacent said lugs, supporting-arms pivotally mounted in the first-mentioned opening and having feet projecting through the openings and engaging the arcuate bail-ends, and means to retain said supporting-armsin a lowered position.
