A TTORNE Y.
UNITED STATESi EFATENT OFFICE.
DIPPER-FUNNEL Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. 15, 1921.
Application filed January 23, 1920. Serial No. 353.547.
My invention relates to transferring de-v vices and may best be termed a Dipper Funnel. It is designed to provide a simple and effective means for transferring fruits, veg-e tables, et cetera, from a kettle to a widemouthed jar. It is particularly adapted to the transfer of preserved frults such as peaches wherein the solid portions of the preserves are of material size and substance although it may be used for small fruits such as berries and also may be used for measuring and emptying into a sack.
Experience has shown that it is not a simple thing to pour preserves of the nature indicated from a dipper into a wide-mouthed jaw and for successfully performing these operations in the course of preserving on any substantial scale it is practically necessary to provide a funnel with a wide outlet. I have simplified the entire problem and solved the diiiiculty under which the housekeeper or other operator labors by providing a utensil which combines the functions of a dipper with. a funnel, sothat the very device used for dipping can, by a simple manipulation, be transformed into a funnel.
The preferred embodiment of my inven tion is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts and wherein Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my dipper funnel.
Fig. 9. is a plan view of my dipper funnel, illustrating the valve thereof in. full line an d in dotted line positions.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3--3 of Fig. 2, V In the drawings, my device is shown as comprising a substantially hemispherical body portion 1 that is provided at its bottom with a cut away portion 2 of preferably cir: cular form and of relative wide dimensions. The walls of this circular cut out portion are downwardly extended so as to provide a substantially annular flange 3 depending from the body of the member 1 and giving it the general outlines of a rounded funnel with a wide outlet.
Normally covering the outlet thus formed is a valve 4..- desirably formed of sheet mabe made and sold very cheaply.
terial having substantially the same curvature as the interior of the body portion 1 and provided with upwardly extending arms 5, one on either side thereof. These arms 5 extend along the interior side walls of the body portion 1, being curved to substantially conform thereto. They are pivoted adjacent their upper ends as at 6 to the side walls of the body portion 1 these pivots being desirably at the edge of such body portion or immediately below. The arms 5 extend above and forward of these pivotal points and these extensions may be designated 7.
The body portion is carried by a handle 8 and mounted upon this handle so as to be slidable thereon is a link 9 having its forward end upwardly extended as at 10'and connected to the extensions '7 of the arms 5 as at 11. The rear end of the link 9 is de sirably slidable in a groove 12 in the handle but is normally held in its forward position by means of a coil spring 13. Its extreme rear end is upwardly and laterally bent as at 14 so as to form a finger hold when the handle of the device is held in the hand of the operator.
In. operation, the dipper funnel with its valve in position to cover the outlet opening in its bottom is used as a dipper to select a portion. of the preserves from the kettle. In this position of the valve the dipper funnel is substantially liquid-tight. A portion of the preserves is dipped and the dipper funnel is then removed and placed over a wide-n1ou thed jar. Then, the valve is pulled. to one side and the selected portion of the preserves will gravitate through the base of the funnel into the jar.
The device is simple and efiicient. It may And it eliminates all necessity for holding a funnel with one hand and pouring with the other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A dipper funnel comprising a funnelshaped. body portion with an opening in its bottom. and a valve within said body portion andnornially closing the opening therein, said valve conforming in shape to the interior of the body portion and movable to uncover the opening therein by a sliding action along the interior of said body portion.
In testimony whereof I hereby aflix my signature.
