Be it known that-I, BARNIM L. BEHRENDT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvente'd cerand I do hereby declare the following to be alfull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and'to figures of ref erence marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved box for matches, tobacco, cigars and the like, the box having a lid, the lid in turn providing means for holding. matches against-the inside of the lid in such a manner that the matches can be individually detached.
The lid is preferably supplied with an abrasive or igniting surface to be used in lighting the matches, particularly safety matches. The matches are atlixed to the lid and being placed on the inside of the lid, need no additional separate compartment, butare contained, in t he box with thecigarettes. etc.
This invention is used with boxes. the lids of which are flat or substantially Hat onthe top to provide a surface for the matches to lie against.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a metal cigarette box showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a tobacco box. Fig. 3 is a section through line 3, 3, in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 I show a metal box 10 having a lid 11 which is supplied with a. marginal flange 12 to fit over the outside of the box to form a tight joint and hold the lid shut by friction. The top of the lid is flat or substantially so. Lying against the inside of the top are the strips or sheets 13 which are slitted to form the individually detachable matches 14. The edges of the sheet' adjacent to, the flange are cut to approximately fit the edge of the; lid to prevent any side motion if a match is twisted to one side for detaching it. 1X stripof abrasive or igniting compound 16 is pasted or brushed on the inside of the lid.
I show a tobacco box 17 in Fig. 2, which box has a long. narrowlid 18 with a flange 19 on its margin. The strip of matches 20 is held by a lip 21 bent down from the flange, the matches lying the long Way of the lid. The abrasive or igniting composi tion is placed in the lid at a convenient place.
The invention herein set forth overcomes the necessity of carrying a separate matchbox, and enough matches are provided to allow for the'lighting of the contents of the box if used normally. The marginal flange when bent down to form the lips is so disposed at these lips that they are in position to be engaged b v the top edges of the box everv time the lid is closed. Every time a match is pulled ofi", the lip undergoes a strain which tends to loosen the match strip, but at each closing the strip is again pressed into place tocause it totightlv bind against the. strip that goesto clamp the matches in place. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is; The combination of a box having a lid, the lid having flanges to go over the "outside edge of the box. with a row of detachable matches, a portion of the flange of the lid being bent to forin a lip Jto l old'it'he matches, the lip resting on the edge of the box when the lid is closed. whereby the lip is pressed to its holding position'at every closing of the box.
