J. BITTER. LOOK FOR HAND BAGS.
APPLIGATION FILEDSEPT. 26. 1912.
Patented Dec. 17, 1912 jaw andprovided with ing' witha rib on the other jaw, is employed, while thedouble or safety lock is obtainedv i the bag-frame by y secondly, the closing of the JACOB BITTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. I
Loon Fon- Helen-Bees.
To all whomit may concern; J 1
Be it known that I, JACOB Rrr'rnma citi- Zen ofthe United States of America, res-id ing in New- 5 hat-tan,
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Hand-Bags, of which the following is specification.
This" invention relates to an improved lock for the frames of hand-bags,
pocketbooks and other like articles,by which a' second locking device is combined with an,
ordinary locking device, and thereby a doublelockingaction obtained, while at the same, time the opening of the hand;bag can beaghcompli'shed by a single action of the lockingtdevice;
111 11 at ai'rying my invention into practice, the well-known locking device formed of .a 0 bail-shaped handle, which is pivoted-to one means for interlockb an encircling member which is pivoted to 5 side-lugs both jaws of thebag-frame, so-that closing t elbagframe two operations are necessary rst, the closing of the j-aws'of the ordinary lock, and,
jaws by the second encircling locking member, I while the 3 opening of the bag-frame is accomplished by a singlemovement of the finger successively over the encircling'member and then over 5 the hail of the primary lock, said double lock preventing not'o'nly titious opening of the bagframe, but also permitting the opening ofthe frame by one single movement of the thumb. f For this purpose the invention consists of with the usual pivoted and spring-actuated -bai1 or handle which engages by its lower partwitha raise or rib lonlth'e, other jaw of 'the'frame; and an encircling-member pivoted to. one'of the jaws and g opening inits upperpa-rt for permitting the baihsha'ped handle to pass through .the same gwhen ,lockiniggthe-;encircling"1neinberto the a ame.-.... A

In connection with the circling member being provided with lugs and with a shank d? extending from one'of the clasps or lugs cifi'which shank is pivoted to'the jaw a that is to say, the .jaw which is provided with the hinged bail sha ed handle, so that when the-encircling member;
is turned on-its pivot and placed clasp-" ing position on the jaws of the bag or satchel frame, a double or safety lockis ob -j tained, which cannot be opened by'the accidental or intentional opening of the primary I look, so as toprevent eflectively the operiingof the bag or satchelfand the tampering. with the, contents-thereof.
When it is desired-toopen the hand-bag or satchel, the encircling member is lifted it clears the baihshaped portion of the primary lock, when motion and presses 7, her, pressingthe same backwardly on the inge-connection with the jaws, so .51s to clear the interlocking raise or rib on the othcr by one. continuousmotion, of the thumb, the

member or secondary lock for inclosing the primary lock and lock the jaws at opposite sides.
The construction of the double safetylock for hand-bags and other articles is simple and inexpensive and forms at the same time a very attractive locking device, inasmuch as the impression of a padlock is given by the bail and clasping side-lugs of the encircling member, so that an attractive appearance is imparted to the bag or satchel provided with the-double or safety lock.
I claim: v
1. A look for hand-bags, satchels and other articles, .comprisinga primary lockin device for the jaws of the bag-frame, sai primary locking device consisting of a spring-actuated bail-shaped handle hinged to one jaw and an interlocking raise or rib on the other jaw, and a secondary or safety locking device pivoted to the jawto which the handle is applied and provided with side jaw, and a secondary or safety locking de-' vice pivoted to the side of the jaw to which the handle is applied, said secondary device having an opening in its top-part for permitting the handle to pass through the same, and side lugs or clasps for locking the jaws at opposite sideswhen in closed position.
In testimony; that claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribingWitnesses.
