To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STE'FFAN ZOLDESSY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monkeyrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in monkey wrenches, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character whereby the movable jaw may be readily and quickly adjusted to' different sizes to fit the different sized Work such as nuts, bolts and the like on which the wrench is being used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench which may be quickly taken apart and a new piece substituted for any that may have become broken and useless.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a spring actuating locking block in which the spring will be entirely inclosed so that said spring will be protected and prevented from coming in contact with the person of the user or parts of the work upon which the wrench is being used.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will endeavor to describe its construction in detail referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a monkey wrench made in accordance with my imrovement. Fig. 2, a similar view, showing the movable jaw and locking block in section, and illustrating a modified form of handle which is partly shown in section, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the locking block.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied 2 represents the shank of the monkey wrench having an immovable jaw 3, and carrying a suitable handle 4. The shank 2 is rovided along its inner edge with teeth 5 which are engaged by a tooth 6, formed on Specification of Letters Patent.

the inner front wall of the locking block 7, said locking block having a shank opening 8 from which extends a smaller opening 9 through'which passes the screw 10, said screw being threaded into the opening 11 in the movable jaw 12. The tooth 6 formed with the'locking block is normally held in engagement with one of the teeth 5 by a flat spring 13, the end of which is mounted in a groove 14 beside the threaded opening 11 and said spring is held in said groove 14 by the threads of the screw 10. The free end of said spring 13 projects into the opening 9 in the locking block and engages the inner face of the rear wall of said locking block, thereby forcing the tooth 6 into contact with the teeth 5 on the front edge of the shank. The head of the screw 10 is larger than the opening 9 thus preventing the displacement of the locking block 7 until said screw 10 is removed. The outer face of the rear wall of the locking block is roughened as indicated by 15 to prevent the slipping of the finger when said looking block is being disengaged from the shank to operate the movable jaw. If found desirable, the working face of the jaws may be roughened or channeled as indicated by 16.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a threaded projection 17 formed with the end of the wrench shank 2, and this projection is adapted to register with the threaded opening 18 in the handle 19 thus permitting said handle to be removed for disassembling the wrench or for replacing the old handle by a new one.
In practice, when the wrench is to be used, the jaws are placed over the bolt or nut, the movable jaw slid along the shank until said movablejaw engages the work, it being understood that the immovable jaw is already in engagement with the opposite side of the work. At this time, the locking block will prevent any backward movement of the movable jaw and prevent it from becoming disengaged. from the work. After the operation is completed, the thumb is placed upon the rear face of the locking block causing it to move forward against the action of the spring 13 which will disengage the toot-h 6, from the teeth 5 upon the shank and permit the movable jaw to be slid toward the handle of the wrench for disengaging it from the work.
