Description
WILLIAM B. WAIT, OF NEW'YORK, N. Y.
EMBOSSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1912.
Application filed November 18, 1911. Serial No. 661,093.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that LNVILLIAM B. VAIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embossing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for embossing literature for reading by the blind.
The device consists of a number-of hinged sections or parts, each section being provided with elevations and depressions on to which is fitted correspondingly shaped plates with the embossed characters. Each section carries one or more embossing plates whereby both sides or pages of one, or a number of leaves can be simultaneously embossed. The elevations of one section are opposite the depressions of the other section, and each depression is equipped with an elastic cushion for receiving the impressions made by the embossed characters formed on the elevations of the plates.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specilication and claim and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a face view of the device. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the elastic blankets removed. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section of Fig. l on a larger scale. Fig. l is a longitudinal detail section of the same.
In this drawing the letters a and Z) respectively designate two sections or parts of a plate holder. The holders have hinges c whereby the device may be folded or closed.
The holder a is provided with a series of elevations d and depressions e best seen in Fig. 3. This section a carries two embossing plates f and g, these plates have elevations f and g to correspond to the shape of the holder. The opposite section b is also provided with elevations and depressions on which are fitted two embossing plates L and z' having elevations it and i. The elevations of these latter plates are opposite the depressions of the adjacent plates.
Strips with projecting lugs m engage one ofthe edges of each embossing plate, while the other edge of each plate is engaged by sliding lugs n. These devices will effectively fasten a plate to a holder. The lugs n can be slid backward when a plate is to be removed.
Each section is equipped with an elastic blanket 0 'which forms a cushion like grille fitting into the depressions of the plates and is adapted for producing the impressions. These blankets can be fastened to the sections by means of pins' p projecting from the faces of the holders.
The section has dowel pins g which when the sections are closed engage holes r in the adjacent section, these pins keep the two sections centered in their relation to each other.
As shown in the drawing each section of a holder has two divisions,'each division being supplied with an embossing plate. In this construction the device will emboss two leaves or sheets of paper s shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. Each leaf is k,placed on to one of the embossed plates of a section, the other section is then folded or turned over on to the leaves with the embossed plates facing each other the leaves being between them. The device can then be run through a cylinder or a flat press. Consequently each section of the device will emboss one side of the leaf while both sections thus coperating together will produce the characters on both pages of the leaf. It is preferable to have the holders made of some flexible material.
It should be stated that each section could be provided with only one embossing plate for embossing one sheet on bot-h its sides at the same time.
I claim:
p An embossing device consisting of a pair of holders hinged together each holder having elevations and depressions, embossing plates having corresponding elevations and depressions carried by each holder the elevations of one plate being opposite the depressions of the other plate, said elevated In testimony. whereof I have'hereuntoset portions of the plates vlosing provided With my hand in the presence of tvvo subscribing 'i l raised characters formed in the plates for Witnesses.
`simultaneously embossing both surfaces of WILLIAM B. VAI'I. 5 a sheet of paper, and devices slidingly v Witnesses:
mounted on the holders for engagement p WILLIAM MILLER,
With the edge portions of the plates. CHRIS. H. ALMSTAEDT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
