BENJAMIN BLH'UNTJOVON AND OWEN McOA-NN, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNORS TO AMERICAN PRINTING HOUSE FOR THE BLIND, A CORPORATION OF KENTUCKY.
PRINTING FOR THE BLIND IN RAISED LETTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1909.
Application filed June 29; 1908. Serial No. M1342.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN B. HUN- TOON and OWEN MCCANN, citizens of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing tion.
and particularly to improved printing devices for printing for the blind, and has for an object the provision of means that will print in alternate lines upon opposite sides of the same sheet of paper.
A further object in view is the provision of a protection plate for protecting the projections on the embossing plate.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l I shows an embossing press adapted to carry the printing and protecting plates embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail fragmentary perspective view of a protecting plate. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary perspective view of an embossing plate. is a section through Fig. 3, approximately on line 4-4.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates a press as a whole having an impression cylinder 2, and a form cylinder 2 upon which are mounted embossing plates 3. Beneath the embossing plate 3 is arranged a protection plate 4 that protects the projections or intaglio portions from being bruised or smoothed by the cylinder. The embossing plate 3 is formed with a plurality of projections or relief portions arranged in pairs of rows spaced apart, each pair of rows containingprojections arranged for spelling out words. Between each pair of rows of relief portions there are arranged two rows of intaglioportions that form PTOJGCtlOl'lS or relief portions u on the opposite side. The embossing p ate formed in this manner is placed upon protection plate 4 so that the intaglio porfor the Blind in Raised i Letters, of which the following is a specifica- I g l the impression cylinder 2 This invention relates to printing devices, I

tions fit into the apertures 6 of plate 4 and then both plates are clamped on the form cylinder 2 In operation the .paper 6 is fed between the rollers 2 and as the same comes in contact with the embossing plate 3 the paper is embossed or forced upward by the projections 5 and by the action of the rubber blanket 7 on the paper is forced downward into the intaglio portions 8 so that after the paper has gone completely through the machine it is embossed on both sides. The protecting plate t prevents the pressure of the cylinder 2 from mashing or in any way injuring the intaglio portions 8 but permits the blanket to readily force the paper therein. In this way both sides of the paper can be printed upon. and twice the amount of matter placed on each sheet of paper than when simply one side of the paper is embossed. Another advantage of this construction and arrangement is the ability to print or emboss both sides at the same time. In the drawings the embossing plate has been shown with rows of embossing characters arranged in pairs on each side of the plate, but it will be evident that single rows spaced apart may be used or a large number of rows may be used associated together as occasion may require. The protecting plate 4 in such instance would be provided with either single rows or apertures of a plurality of rows of apertures according to the formation of the embossing plate.
Nhat I claim is:
1. An embossing plate having lines of embossing characters on each side thereof, the lines of characters on one side alternating with the lines of characters on the other side in combination with a projecting plate having openings adapted to receive the embossing characters on one side of said embossing plate.
2. An embossing couple comprising an embossing element made up of a perfecting embossing plate and a protection plate on one side thereof having rows of Openings therein and a yielding impression element, said embossing element having alternating lines of characters on opposite sides thereof,
the lines of characters on one side entering plate are adapted to lit, and an impression correspondmg openmgs 1n sa1d proteetlon element for causing paper passed over Saul plate. embosslng plate to be formed wlth rollel por- 3.
