Be itknown that I, CHARLES A. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvemcn ts in the Process of Making Duplicate Copies of Writings, &-c.. and in apparatus therefor', of which the following is a speciiication. l
This invention relates to the production of a transfer-sheet for manifold copying for producing autographic writing, printing, or similar delineation by impression; and my improvement consists in the method, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in'the claims, by which my improved transfer-sheet is produced.

withthe prepared sides or faces of such sheets placed against the transfer-sheet, which is of. such a character that it will absorb and retain the composition of the sheets when receiving the same at all points where pressure is brought to bear against the sheets. lVhen, now, writing or printing is eii'ected upon the upper sheet by means ot' a pencil, stylus, type-writer, form of type, or other suitable means of impression, the composition of the vinclosing-sheets will be imparted to and absorbed by the transfer-sheet from both sides at all points subjected to the pressure of the delineatons of such writing or printing, and the composition will, on account of the nature of thetransfer-sheet, penetrate the saine and remain in the same, so lthat the impression will stand in obverse or in positive form upon one side of the sheet and in reverse or in negative form upon the other side and extend through the entire thickness of the sheet. When, now, the sheet is passed through the Apress shown in the drawings or through a similar press, the impregnated delineations' upon the transfer-sheet will be capable of being impressed upon and communicated to the copying-paper, the thoroughly-impregnated characters or configurations of the sheet eX- tending through its entire thickness bein g capable of rendering a greater number of impressions than u hen only impregnated from one side of the sheet. The tran ster-sheet may, however, be only impregnated from one side, as'shown in Fig. l, when the transfer-sheet is placed face down upon the prepared sheet and has the writing made in obverse or positive form upon its back, receiving the delineations in reversevor negative form upon its face, the composition penetrating the points subjected to the pressure of the delineating medium.
For the purpose of re-enforcing the sheet IOO and rendering it more durable, it may be secured to a backing, II, as `shown vin Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States* 1. The improved method of preparing a transfer-sheet for manifold printing or copyL ing, consisting in placing the absorbent sheet face down upon a surface impregnated and coated with the copying or printing medium or material, and producing by pressure the desired delineations or characters in obverse upon the back of the transfer-sheet, causing the said sheet w absorb the copying or prints ing medium at the points of impressionanti` to have the delineations or characters to appear in reverse upon the face of the sheet absorbed into the same, as shown and described.
2. The improved method of preparing a transfer-sheet for manifold copying or printing, consisting in placing the absorbent` transfer-sheet between two sheets having their facing sides coated or impregnated with the print-ing or copying medium, and thereupon producing the desireddelineations or characters by pressure upon the back of one oi' the inclosing-sheets, ,causing the transfersheet to absorb the copying or printing medium at the points of pressure and to be thoroughly impregnated therewith from both sides, producing the impressed delineations or characters to appeal' in obverse upon the bar-k of the transfer-sheet and in reverse upon the face of the same, and to'be absorbed through the entire thickness of the sheet from both sides,
as shown and described.
