A mirror-script master for use in a lithographic duplicating machine is produced by preparing one surface of a sheet of waterimpermeable material as to render it receptive to grease or water, placing this surface against a grease-laden sheet and typing, printing or writing on the other surface of the waterimpermeable sheet. The greasy sheet is then stripped off and the master used in a direct printing duplicating machine having provision for applying both a grease repellent liquid such as water and a greasy printing ink. The water renders the grease-free areas of the surface repellent to the ink, the ink being received by, and transferred to the copy sheet from those areas of the sheet which have become grease laden in the typing, printing or writing operation. The water-impermeable sheet may be of a water,impermeable paper or a synthetic material, e.g. a thermoplastic. The greasy sheet may be of paper or cloth, either soaked in, or carrying a layer of a mixture of petroleum jelly and wax and soot. A protective cover layer, e.g. of latex, albumin or wax may be applied to the greasy sheet, portions of this layer also being transferred to the surface of the printing surface. If the script is impressed on the other side in a typewriter without removing the ribbon, the positive of the text to be duplicated appears readably on this surface. This surface may be printed in a printing press with lines, headings, &c. comprising a form, the form being afterwards completed by hand- or typewriting with the greasy sheet still in position. When the greasy sheet is stripped off the completed form will appear in greasy areas on the printing side of the sheet. A convenient assembly consists of the greasy sheet, an intermediate sheet, e.g. of paper and the printing sheet stuck lightly together by adhesion. The intermediate sheet is removed before the step of typewriting, printing, &c., on the outer surface of the printing sheet. A suitable machine for printing with the master sheet is described in Specification 757,020.
