FIGJ
INVENTOR wmuas'ses ATTORNEYS and State of Pennsylvania,
. xenon xoLLfis, or MONESSEN; Ha mer-1m.-
. WRENCH. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (looiv KoLLt'Is, a sub-' ject of the King of Hungary, residing at- Monessen, in the county of Westln'oreland have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being. had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to that type commonly styled a quick acting monkey wrench.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a wrench of the above type wherein simple and efi'ective means are employed, in
a manner as Wlll be hereinafter set forth,
for quickly adjusting the movable jaw of the wrench.
Another object of this invention is to provide av wrench of the above type consisting of comparatively few parts readily assembled to provide a structure that is not liable to injury by ordinary use.
With the above and other objects in'view,
the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed. Reference will now be had to the drawing,
wherein Figure 1 is aside elevation of the wrench, partly broken away and'partly in section,
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the-same, Fig.
3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the.
line IIIIII of Fig. 1, showing the adjust able jaw of the wrench in a locked position, Fig. 4 is a similar view showingthe adjustable jaw in an unlocked position, and Fig. 5
is a plan of a detached collar and sleeve adapted to form part of the wrench.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a shank 1 substantially rectangular in cross section, saidshank having the outer end thereof provided with a fixed jaw 2 and the inner end thereof with a handle 3, said handle having a cylindrical portion 4. The shank 1 has the front and rear. faces thereof rounded and provided with teeth 5, for a purpose that will presently pp e Specificationof Letters 1atent. I
Slidably inounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw 6 having depending front and rear portions 7 and 8 connected by a ring 9. a
Extending into the ring 9 is the outer re- Patented Dec. 3,1912.
Application med February 23,1912. Serial no. 679,367. Y r Y A I Y duced end 10 of a sleeve 11 that surrounds a a portion of the shank 1. The sleeve 11 has diametrically opposed teeth-12 to engage the teeth 5 of the shank'l, and the inner end of the sleeve 11 is cut away, as at 13 to provide clearance for the cylindrical portion 4 of the handle 3, whereby said sleeve can be shifted on to the cylindrical portion of'said handle. I
Shrunk or otherwise mounted upon the reduced end 10015 the sleeve 11 is a collar 14 having the periphery thereof provided with shoulders 15 and 16 adapted to engage the portion 8 of the jaw 6. The periphery of the collar 14 is engaged'by the ends of a bow spring 17 that is riveted or otherwise secured, as at 18 to the portion 7 of the jaw 6. The portions 7 and 8 of said jaw are cut collar 14, also clearance for the bow spring 17. The spring 17 frictionally holds, the colaway, as at 19 toprovide clearance for the lar 14 and the sleeve 11 in anadjusted p0:
sleeve ll-being made'of asuflicient length to permit of a free grip being obtained by the hand 'upon the sleeve for adjustment pu rposes.
I By rotating the sleeve 11 a quarter a revolution in either direction, the tee 12 of said sleeve can be placed in orout of engagement with the teeth 5 of the shank and when the sleeve 11 is rotated relatively .to said shank, the spring 17 holds the sleeve 11 in an adjusted position by engaging the periphery of the, collar 14. Y
What I claim is In a wrench of the character described, a shank provided with interrupted screw threads, a movable jaw slidably mounted on 'said shank, a fixed jaw on the shank, said movable jaw being providedavith a pocket.
- a locking c0115 surrounding the eha nk and. engagement in the noteh as the collar is I provided with interrupted Screw threads ,shifted from locking to unlocking position.
adapted to engage the threads" on the 'shank,j In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 4 s'aid'collar being-located in said pocketand inthe presence-of two-witnesses.
I provided with a peripheral notch, and a .7 t it ()DON KGLLI'TS. sprmg havlng-lts'jcentral port on secured to Wit e v the wall of said pocket'and itsoppqsite ends v 1 ALFRED T I bearing against the collar and arranged for A H S Copies ef this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents,
