TONGS FOR CUSPIDORS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 535,357, dated. March 12, 1895..

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that we, FRANK D. GROCKER and FRED EARLL, citizens of theUnited States, and residents of Stevens Point, in the county of Portage and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs for Ouspidors and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Our invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical and convenient tool for handling cuspidors; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of our device partly in section and in position on a cuspidor. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of our device out of use and partly broken away.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a handle-bar having a longitudinal slot 6 triangularly enlarged at its outer end. The under side of the outer end of the handlebar is recessed as shown at o to form a jaw B engageable with the rim of an ordinary cuspidor and the sides of said bar are provided with slots d that communicate with the one I) aforesaid and serve as guides for pivot-ears e extended laterally from the shank fof another jaw G that is also engageable with the rim of the cuspidor diametricallyopposite the former aw.

The jaw O and its shank correspond in shape to the slot b in the handle bar and are swung up into the latter when the device is not in use. The outer end of the jaw O is beveled and a correspondingly beveled face of the slot 6 in the handle-bar is matched therewith when said jaw is swung into said bar and thus the former is prevented from swinging through said slot. To hold the jaw O in the handle-bar we employ a button D that turns on the shank of said jaw to overlap said handle-bar. The jaw O is swung up and locked in the handle-bar to render the tool as compact as possible when not in use.

The jaw 0 being loose in guides longitudinal of the handlebar A, it may be readily adjusted to or from the jaw B, and thus our device may be connected to cuspidor rims of various diameters.

From the foregoing. description it will be understood that the tongs resulting from the construction and arrangement of parts above specified may be utilized to carry cuspidors from place to place and to handle the same while they are being cleaned. We also find it convenient to provide the jaw end of the handle-bar with a vertical opening g in which to fit the shank of a brush employed to clean said cuspidors.

While we have shown a preferred form of our device the structural details of the same may be somewhat varied without departure from the scope of our invention.

Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A tool for handling cuspidors, the same comprising a handle-bar having a longitudinal slot and its outer end in the form of a jaw, another jaw engageable with said slot and beveled at its outer end to match a correspondingly beveled face of the aforesaid slot, pivot-ears on the shank of the latter jaw adj ustable longitudinally of the handle-bar, and a turn-button on said shank.

2. A tool for handling cuspidors, the same comprising a handle-bar having its outer end in the form of a jaw and provided with a longitudinal main slot and other similar slots that extend in from the sides of the bar to communicate with the former slot, another jaw that with a shank extending therefrom may be inclosed within the main slot of the handle-bar, pivot-ears on the shank of the latter jaw loose in the side slots of said haudle-bar, and suitable means for locking this latter jaw and its shank in the aforesaid handle-bar.
