Description

H. S. DANA.
PEN BXTRAGTOR.
APPLICATION FILED Hum, 1912.
Patented Nov. 26, 1912.
HERBERT S. DANA, OF TUNKHANNOCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
PEN-EXTRACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1912.
Application led February 6, 1912. Serial No. 675,704.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT S. DANA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tunkhannock, in the county of Wyoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen-Extractors, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a pen extractor and has special reference to a device for facilitating the extraction of pen points from pen holders which device is in the form of an attachment to aI pencil sharpener, the object being to save time and prevent injuring or soiling the fingers, while extracting a pen point from a pen holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pen extractor of such construction and arrangement that it will not injure the pen point during the extracting process, thus enabling the pen point to used again.
The device as a whole is adapted to be carried in the pocket or purse for the convenience of the user.
With the above-mentioned objects and others in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination pencil Sharpener and pen extractor. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, part-ly in section, of the device on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The pencil Sharpener comprises a substantially cylindrical body 1 having at one end a conical stall 2 adapted to receive the point of a pencil while being sharpened and also to hold the point of the pencil up to the action of the cutting blade 3 which is detachably secured to an extension of the stall 2 by means of screws or other fasteners 4.
The extracting device comprises a clamping band 5 substantially cylindrical in shape and adapted to fit tightly around the barrel or body 1 and bearing a fixed relation thereto when the parts are connected together. The clamping band is provided with diskshaped extensions 6 arranged substantially parallel to each other as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and provided with spacing flanges 7 which terminate at their lower ends a sulficient distance apart to leave an arcuate slot or space 8 in which the extractor lever moves, as will hereinafter appear.
The extractor lever 9 is pivotally mounted at 10 between the extensions 6 above referred to and is provided at its outer extremity with a milled head or thumb piece 11 by means of which the outer end portion of the lever may be rocked back and forth in the slot or aperture 8.
The inner arm 12 of t-he lever is preferably extended at an angle to the outer arm 9, as shown in Fig. Q, and the extremity of the arm 12 is rounded as shown in Fig. 2 and adapted to be brought into frictional contact with a pen point, shown at 13, when the latter is inserted between the extractor lever and the barrel or body 1 of the pencil Sharpener. In orde-r to obtain the best result, the body 1 is provided with a semicylindrical offset or hump 14 having substantially the same cross sectional shape as the average pen point and thereby forming a seat or saddle for the pen point as best illustrated in Fig. 3. 15 designates any conventional form of pen holder from which the pen 13 is to be extracted.
In operation, the pen holder is brought into such relation to the device as to insert the pen point 13 between the extractor lever and the semi-cylindrical extension or hump 14. By means of the milled head 11, the extractor lever is then rocked until the pen point is firmly clamped and fricti'onally held between the extractor lever and the extension or hump 14. By then drawing outward on the holder 15, the pen point is left clamped in the manner described and the greater the pull on the pen holder, the more tightly will the pen point be clamped and held until it is extracted from the holder. Afterward, by rocking the extractor lever in the opposite direction, the pen point may be released ready for reinsertion in the holder.
I claim 1. A device of the class specified, embodying a barrel-shaped body, a clamping band tightly embracing said body and bearing a fixed relation thereto, extensions at opposite portions thereof lying in substantially parallel planes and forming a combined finger grip and housing, and an extractor lever pivotally mounted in said housing and arranged to clamp a pen against the barrelshaped body.
2. A. device of the class specied embodying a barrel-shaped body having a periphfrctionally hold a pen point When the latter eral hump, a clamping band tightly einbracis inserted between the lever and hump. 10 ing said body and bearing zt fixed relation In testimony whereof I atlix my signature thereto, extensions at opposite portions in presence of two Witnesses.
thereof lying in substantially parallel planes HERBERT S. DANA.
and forming a combined nger grip and Witnesses: housing, and an extractor lever pivotally L. L. TRAVIS, mounted in said housing and arranged to C. P. MGKEON.
