Applicaties mea aprire, 190s. sensi ivo, 425,585,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OswALn S. PULLIAM, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End Sills for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a. new and improved end-sill for railway cars.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates applications of my invention, Fi re 1 is a. rear perspective View of an en -sill embodying my invention; Fi Q a front perspective view of the form o Fig. 1; Fig. 3 an elevational view of a modified form of end-sill; and Fi 4 a part elevational and a part Asectiona view, the section being taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the end-sill pro er, as illustrated and as preferred, is; ma e as an integral cast-metal structure and comprises a vertically extending member 1, a series of pockets 2 adapted to receive the center-sill, the side-sills and the intermediate-sills of a car; a plurality of pockets 3 adapted to receive corner posts or upright members entering into the construction of a car-body.
In the drawing, I have shown only two pockets 3 designed for two corner-posts, but additional similar pockets may be provided for intermediate vupright members. The vertically extending member l is formed withprotected openings 4, adapted to receive truss-roda?, and with push-pockets 5. Extending inwardly from the vertical ineinber and entering into the formation of the pockets for the longitudinal car-sills, I employ a floor supporting member 6. This member or ledge is designed tosupport the ends of the car flooring 7, as particularly g. 4. Extending above the upper surface of the car-flooring and at right angles with the member 7 I provide a meinber or portion 8. This portion 8 is designed to protect the lower endshof the boards entering into the construction of the ends of the car-body.
.As shown by the several views of the drawing, I dee en the end-sill at its central portion am provide means for supporting a drawbar, not shown. 'In the form of Fig. 3 the vertical member is tapered and cut away to receive the draw-bar, While in the form of Fig. l the supporting plate 9 is formed to receive the draw-bar. In both foi-ms ithe plates 9 and 9* are preferably made separate from the end-sill proper.
What I claim is:
l. The combination with a car-flooring, of an integral cast metal end-sill comprising a vertical Web and of channel form in gross section, a plurality of sill receiving members projecting from the rear face of the web, a door supporting member entering into the members, Said 'car fiooring dis osed on the floor supporting member, an a vertical member project; above the, car-loorin and the web of t e end-sill,.said vertica member extending substantially'he" length of the end-sill and disposed at right-"angles to the door supporting member.
2. The combination with a car-flooring, of an integral cast metal end-sill comprising a vertical web and of channel form in cross section with the front face of the web formed with protected truss-rod openings, a plurality of sill receiving members rojecting from the rear face of the.l web), a Hoor supporting member entering into the foi-mation ot' the sill receiving members, said car-fiooring disposed on the floor supporting member, and a vertical memberprojecting above the car-flooring and the web of the end-sill, said vertical member extending substantially the length of the end-sill and disposed at right angles to the floor supporting member.
3. The combination with a car-Hooring, of an integral cast metal end-sill Comprising a vertical web and of channel form in cross section with the front face of the web formed with protected trussjrod openings 9 and push-pockets, a plurality of sill receiving members projecting from the rear face of the web, a iioor supporting member entering into the formation of the sill receiving members, said car-flooring disposed on formation of the sill receiving .i of the endsii1 and disposed at right angles A. C. WAY,
the Hoor supporting member, and a vertical member projecting above the czmfiooring and the web of the endsill, said vertical member Xtending substantially the length Witnesses:
In testimon whereof I a'x my signature in presence 0 two wiinesses.
OSWALD S. PULLAM.
