' GATE-LATCH Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 25, 1912.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912. Serial No. 673,368.
I! '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARMON DE LEON Moisn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sumter, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to locks, and more particularly to that class that are known as gate-latches.
The main object of this invention is to provide a latch which can be used for holding a gate in open and closed positions, and at the same time may be reinforced in its locking action by means of a padlock or other suitable fastening device.
Further objects are to arrange the latch so that it may be constructed easily and at a comparatively low cost, and so that it may be easily manipulated from either side of the gate on which it is placed.
Another object is to have the latch applicable for use with gates of all kinds, and under all conditions.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as it is more fully set forth.
The device referred to in this specification consists, in general, of a symmetrical member adapted to project on either side of a gate and serve as a catch for locking the gate in either open or closed positions, suitable means being provided for attaching said member to a gate. The member is also arranged so that a padlock may be used for attaching it to a hasp, and at the same time not interfering in any way with the action of the latch, but on the other hand adding several features which are advantageous to it.
ln the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example, an embodiment of this invention, Figure l is a View in perspective of a latch embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the latch applied to a gate in closed position, and Fig. 3 is a detail showing the method of applying a padlock to the latch.
Similar reference characters refer to simi lar parts throughout the drawings.
in the construction shown 1 denotes a spring hinge of any suitable form, to which the latch member 2 is attached. The end portions 3 and 4 of the member 2, are bent back on themselves in the manner clearly shown in the drawings, so as to provide triangular tongues, that will engage and catch on a staple 6, disposed in a stopping post 7, and at the same time permit a padlock S to be used for locking the staple and end or tongue caughton the same.
The manner of applying the padlock to the staple and end of the latch member is clearly indicated in Fig. 3. It is obvious that by connecting the end -l to another staple, suitably positioned, that the gate can be locked. in open position also, in a similar manner to that just described.
It will be noted that the form of tongue used in this device provides a comparatively strong catch, as well as providing a means for the easy manipulation of the lock. As the catch projects on both sides of the gate, indicated at 5, it may be actuated from either side of the same.
The device while eifective for the purpose for which it is intended is comparatively simple in its construction and may be manufactured at a "cry low cost. It is very easily attached to a gate, and is withoutany parts that are loose or liable to become easily lost or detached.
Having thus described this invention what is claimed is:
In combination with a padlock and a bent wire hasp disposed so that its stems will be over one another, a latch for gates comprising a spring hinge, a latch member rigidly secured to one leaf of said hinge, said menr her having its end portions bent into rightangle triangle form, whereby said end portions will catch on said hasp and permit said padlock to lock the same to one of said end portions substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'liix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARMON on LEON Morse.
Witnesses E. H. RT-IAMES, H. R. VAN DEVENTER.
