Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed April 6, 1912'. Serial No. ($8,828,
' bottom tubes or" the boiler' an ext-ra series oi tubes connected into the boiler circulation, and will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which* Figure l is a central longitudinal, section through a boiler embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 a det-ail vertical section on the plane of .the yline 2%2 oit Fig.` 1, and Figs. 3
and fl, detail view-s ot' certain parts.
Similar reference numerals indicate similar parts ot'the several views,
For the purpose of illustrating the appli v cation of my invention l have selected a well-kno in type ot boiler comprising a bank l oi inclined tubes connected to front und rear headers i? and fl respectively'. This bank; of tub is divided by transverse battles to provide o s for the gases from the furnace l to the uol he, as is usual in that type oi boiler. This type of boiler comprises a row of tubes below and son'iewhat detached from the bant: of tubes, said lower tubesiheing fl'onuected with, the boiler circulation by Hiding' their ends into horizontal boxes d and Z approximately rectangular in crosssect'ion; said boxes bemg connected by short.
tubes or nipples S to the headers. lt all of the tubes 5 should discharge their circulattuy water into a single chamber it is possible that the circulation of the boiler might be disturbed by greatly varying' heat conditions on opposite sides oft the furnace. In order to prevent such disturbance of boiler circulation, diaphragme 9 Vare placed in either or both ot' the boxes 6 and 7, dividing the box into a number :of separate chambers .l0 thereby preventing the crossing over of the circulatory water from one end of the box to the other. The boxes may be divided by any desired number of "aphragms, five being shown for the purpose of illustration,
dividing the tubes of the bank into groups -to takeits exit through the connecting tube ortubes in that articular portion of it into which it is supplied.
By the use of the diaphragms the circulation of the boiler is divided into vertical sections,` vthat is to say two or three of the verticalheaders, as the case may be,l together with their heating tubes circulate independently of the remainino tubes of the boiler.
The special form o? diaphragm employed by me as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 comprises a plate to which is'secured a spring plate 11 by meansof a bolt and nut 12. The diaphragms are inserted through suitable hand holes in the boxes and by tightening up the nut 12 the spring the walls oi the box.
The diaphragins need not make a perfectly tight lit, in fact, by allowing a small clearance an advantage is derived through the abilityto drain out all water from the vboxes in emptying the boiler without ern- Aploying a large number oi' drainage pipes.
llhat l claim and desire to secure by lietters Patent of the United States is A water tube boiler having a bank of inclined tubes, ront'aud rear headers intov which said tubes are expanded, a row of tubes below said bank, boxes into which said lower tubes'are expanded,.nipples connecting said boxes and headers, diaphragms dividing said boxes into aplurality of chambers, each chamber having one or more inlet holes and one orinore outlet holes for con necting into the boiler circulation.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence 'bf twosubscribing witnesses. ,4 v
