Specification of Letters Patent.
THREAD-GUIDE.
Patented Nov. 12, 1912.
Original application filed December 12, 1908, Serial N 0. 467,163. Divided and this application filed January 12, 1910, Serial No.537,682. Renewed September 12, 1912. Serial No. 720,053.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. MEBRITT, of Worcester, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thread- Guides, which invention is fully setforth in the following specification.
This is a division of my application filed December 12th, 1908', Serial No. 467,163, for improvements in sewing machines.
The present invention, which relatestov improvements in thread-guides, will be readily understood by reference to the illustration in the accompanying drawing of what is at present regarded as the preferred embodiment thereof.
' In said drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view; and Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts spread out.
11 is a part of the frame-work of .a sewing machine or other support to which the thread-guide is adapted to be attached. A cup-like part 1 and a stem 2 are both fixed to the part 11 by a set-screw 3. A head 4 at the outer end of stem 2 has therethrough a thread-eye 5 into which thread may be introduced through a slot 6 opening into one side of said eye. A tubular plunger or sleeve 7 surrounds the stem 2, and is adapted to have longitudinal slidingmovement in the cuplike-part l and on stem 2. A spring 8 coiled about the stem 2 normally presses the tubular plunger outward until a shoulder 9 about the interior of its outer end bears against a shoulder formed about the stem by the inner side of head 4, causing the outer end of the plunger to encircle the inner end of the head,
' so as to extend over and close the'slot 6,
thereby preventing disengagement of the thread from the eye 5 when the parts are in this position. To introduce thread into the I eye 5, the operator grips the milled portion 10 of the plunger and presses the latter inward against the tension of spring 8, uncov ering the slot 6 so that thread may be passed therethrough into the eye. c
What is claimed is 1. A thread-guide consisting of aestem to a position, determined by contact with the shoulder, to extend across said slot and to close the same, or to a position clear of said slot to open the same.
2. A thread-guide consisting of a stem having a slotted thread-eye therethrough, a part movable along said stem to close and open the slot of the eye, and a spring normally pressing said part to position to close said slot.
3. A thread-guide consisting of a stem having a slotted thread-eye therethrough, a sleeve movable along said stem to close and open the slot of the eye, and a spring normally pressing said sleeve to position to close said slot.
4. A thread-guide consisting of a stem having at one end a head with a slotted thread-eye therethrough, a sleeve movable along said. stem to close and open the slot of sleeve against the head of the stem to close said slot. v
5. A thread-guide consisting of a fixed cup-like part, a fixed stem passing through said cup-like part. and having a slotted thread-eye at its outer end, a sleeve movable along said stem to close and open the slot of the thread-eye the inner end of said sleeve and outer end of the cup-like part forming a sliding telescopic joint, and a spring about the stem within the cup-like part and the sleeve normally pressing the latter to position to close the slot of the thread-eye.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR A. MERRITT.
