ADJUSTABLE SHELF.

Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1912.
l To all whom it may concern:
.Be it-known that I, IRA E.--MART1N, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cityof Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesl to adjustable folding Window shelves and the object is to provide device of this character which may be easily adjusted or removed from a casing and be. eflicient in its operation. 4
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. Y
The invention will be more readily understoodby reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication, and in which,v
Figure l is a view, in perspective, of my device, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the telescoped portion of the shelf sections.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises two L- shaped shelf sections 1 and 2 telescoped together in order to adjust the total length of the shelf. .The section l of the shelf is provided with the edge 3 of its Shorter side turned upon said side and 'its edge-4 turned l in a manner to form a groove between such edge and its corresponding side ton engage the edge of the section V2. Section 2 of the shelf is provided with the edge 5 of 'its i longer side turned upon such side to fit the groove formed ybetween the edge 4 andthe longer side vvof section 1 and be longitudinally slidable therein. The edge 6 of the shorter side of section 2 isI bent upon itself and thefportion 7 of such shorter side is also bent to form a recess into which is slidably mounted the edge ,3 of section 1 in a manner so that the sections 1 and 2 will be telescoped together and be of rigid construction; The portions 6 and 7 of section 2 and the edge 3 of section 1 are bent as indicated .in the drawing so that the total width of the edges 3 and 6 will correspond with the width of the -portion 7 so that there willl be a sliding fit between thejportions 'ofthe section 1 and section 2. j A
An ear 9 is-secured at the free edge of each of the sections 1 and 2 and each of such ears is lprovided with an eye in which is slidaby mounted a pin 10.' 'A set screw 8 -secured in the eyes of the ears 11 by meansA of set screws 13.
In operation the device is fixed to a window casing by means of loosening the set screws 8 and extending the shelf sections l and 2 until they fit the inner sides of a window casing, the pins 10 are then driven into thewood of the casing and the set screws 8 tightened to prevent longitudinal movement of the pins 10 in the ears 9. The points on the lower ends of the 'curved arms 12 are enteredinto the outer sides of the window casing to prevent .their slippage upon the surfaces of 'the Window casing and the thumb screws 13 loosened, the shelf raised to a substantially horizontal position and thentightened to vsecure the shelfin such position. Such shelf may be inclined slightly inwardly so that any water falling og? the shelf will be automatically drained o While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying' the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y l Y l. A device of the kind described comprising a telescoping shelf, ears on said shelf; supporting` pins slidably mounted in said ears; and arcuate supporting arms adjustably'secured to said shelf, substantially as described. a v
2. A device of thekind described comprising two shelf Vvsections substantially L'- shaped in cross section and telescoped together; an ear on the free edge of the longer side of each of said shelf sections; a supporting pin slidably mounted in each of said ears; an ear at the angular portion of each invention. I,-
of said shelf sections; and arcuate support ing arms adjustably secured in the ears secured on the angular portions of said shelf, substantially as described.
. 3. A device of the kind'described comprising two shelf sections, each substantially L- shaped in cross section., one provided with al turned edge on its shortgsideto form a groove to engage the corresponding side of the other of said sections and such other sectionis provided with a turned edge on its longer side to engage the-corresponding edge ofsaid first section and such sections telescoped together; an ear on the free edge of the longer side of each of said shelf sections;
a supporting pin slidably mounted in each of ysaid ears; an 'ear at the angular portion of each of said shelf sections; and arcuate supporting arms adjustably secured in the i A ears secured at the angular portions of said shelf sections, substantially as described.
4. 'A device' of the kind described compris.
ing two shelf 'sections substantially L-shaped in cross section, oneprovided with'the edge its shorter side turned upon itself and the 25.:v
edge of `its longer side bentl to engage the` correspondingedge of the other of said sections and such other section having the edge of its shorter side 'turned upon itself andl f sections; a supporting pin slidably mounted 3 Y j in each of said ears and adjustably secured therein; an ear at the, angular portion .ofy j i each of said shelf sections; and arcuate supporting arms adjustably secured in the ears at the angular portionsofsaid shelf Sections', substantially as described.
' In testimony whereof `I'h'ave signedlinyvv v.name to this specification in the `presence of y two subscribing witnesses.
